I do all of my own maint. etc. That being said, today I changed the oil in my 2001 Explorer and noticed the tell tale sign of a bad head gasket; there was (just a little bit) some milky looking stuff on the bottom of the fill cap. Now, I am fairly mechanically inclined but a little concerned about getting in over my head. My best friend is an auto mechanic & I'm sure I could recruit him for the job.
My question is: Has anyone ever tackled one of these for the 4.0 V6; If so, how big a job is it? How would you know which head it is? Do you just do both? Is this something that could be done without special tools?
Finally, I took my truck in for a coolant system cleaning about 2 months ago (I know it's a long shot), has anyone heard of one of these busting a gasket? It would be impossible to prove, I know.
Anyway, any insight is appreciated......
Best Regards,
Mark
