the sport trac started overheating day before yesterday. all indications pointed towards thermostat. no problem, kind of a PIA to replace, but done. cranked truck, everything fine for about a minute, then noise coming from engine that sounds like pennies in a popcorn popper. immediately shut off engine. WTF! unpon closer inspection of the defective thermostat i reailized it wasen't all there. the post and spring that hold the bottom seal in place were missing. dang! must be in the water pump rattling around. pulled water pump, no joy! i used my shop vac and sucked the coolant out of both sides of the block. still no joy! i'm stuck! i don't know what to try next. if i put it all back together and the noise is still there how much damage can they do to the coolant channels in the engine. all advice will be greatly appreciated! i could really use a coolant flow diagram of the 4.0 OHC engine.
