My 2005 Explorer EB is only getting about 12.6 mpg according to the message center on the dash. Anyone know of a way I can increase that?

Tuner will help a little. And of course the normal stuff: air filter, synthetic lubricants, tire pressure, spark plugs, driving style, etc.

Take out any unnecessary items to lighten your ride. I have found that with my tires, running 40psi gets me the best mpg. Experiment a little to see works for you. Also suggest the things listed above.

My 2002 mountaineer 4.6 is at 10.6 right now so is be happy with 12 or 13 mpg.

I would definitely check tire pressure first. I keep my tires at 35 and I'm able to get between 17-20 mpg (depending on type of driving, city vs highway). This is on a 2003 V6.

I do monitor the gas mileage on my cars and any time it starts dipping, the first thing I check is tire pressure. That's typically always been the culprit. There have been a few times where the type of driving I had done during that tank of gas was different than usual, for instance, a lot more short trips than normal.

I also keep my tire pressure between 39 and 40 PSI. I run my 05 EB 4.6l V8 at 1800 RPMs or just under 60 MPH on the hiway. I get 20.5 hiway and 13.5 city mpg. Tires also make a difference. My last tires were Michelin Latitude which are low rolling resistance. I got over 22 mpg hiway with them. My latest set is Michelin LTX ( I wanted the higher load rate) because I live on rural gravel and dirt roads and here in Mx there are as many potholes as speedbumps in the towns. I change my air filter once a year and have never changed plugs (Yes I am due). I bought my EB with 72k miles and now have 133k.
I would also recommend heavy grease on the caliper slides next time you do brakes to keep the pads from dragging.
Anyone have any thoughts on a ram air system? There used to be a product that inserted before the air
box that was supposed to vortex the air for increased HP and MPG.

Changed everything in the front end and coils and plugs 4.6 v8 has to be the easiest vehicle ive ever change plugs in...
Still can't hit 11mpg. Stock size 17inch wheels. About $75.00 a week in gas and don't go anywhere....

I have a slight lift and 31" tires @ 35psi, mostly just drive this vehicle a few miles to church twice a week. 14.8mpg winter, 15.6mpg summer. And yes I have reprogrammed for the oversize tires.

I do check tire pressures regularly, especially now in winter. I've done the filter changes also. I am due for a tune up though, to my knowledge it's never had one. It's just strange to me because my 05 XLS got waaaay better gas milage. Although an XLS is lighter than an EB, so that makes sense. Thanks for all your tips everyone!

I have an '03 Mountaineer w/4.6 and AWD and am averaging 16.2 right now, even with the winter gas blend. I get close to 22 on the highway and 13.X around town. During the summer I get close to 17 average.

I've noticed that with mine, if I'm even a half quart low on oil but still in the "safe" range, it makes a considerable difference in gas mileage.

So Thursday I put $30.00 in my tank and just work and a few errands and Saturday I put $40.00 in and close to half tank now on Monday.
I'm at 10.2 mpg according to the dash...
Pretty pathetic with the v8...

You need to hand calculate. The message center is an estimate at best. Mine typically shows about .4 higher than actual. I log every fill up.

My '02 4.6L (126k miles) gets 16 to 17.2 miles per gallon. And I have to use that junk California gas which is proven to get less miles per gallon. I don't have the message center on my vehicle, so I keep track the old fashioned way, manually and mathematically. I normally drive about 70 mph on the freeway, and I don't have a light foot. Some people have said they got better mileage after replacing their wheel bearings.

Something definitely needs attention if your mileage is that low. Either the engine is running rich and burning too much gas, or the rolling resistance is high, or there is a problem in the drive train. Tune up of plugs, air filter, clean the throttle body, MAF sensor, and the injectors would probably keep the engine running properly. As for rolling resistance, tire pressure, check the brakes to make sure the pads are not dragging, check the parking brake to make sure the shoes are not dragging ( the lining on the shoe can separate from the shoe ), change the differential fluids and transfer case fluid. Check the wheel bearing, sometimes a bearing getting ready to fail gets harder to turn but doesn't grind or feel lose yet. If all of the doesn't improve things, check the transmission ( or have it checked ) to be sure it working properly.

I recently picked up a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer with the 4.6 V8. It was in need of a lot of work, had misfires, coolant leak, bad wheel bearings and maybe got 10mpg. After new plugs, a couple of COPS, cleaned the injectors, throttle body, MAF, air filter, Fuel filter, new intake manifold, 3 new wheel bearings, new tires, new brakes, changed all fluids, and so on, it is now getting 22MPG while on cruise control at 65mph.

Sounds like something needs service on your vehicle, good luck tracking down what the problem is.

Be sure to use all quality parts. All filters should be Motorcraft along with the Spark plugs.

Be sure oil weight is correct, V6 = 5W30 and V8 = 5W20

Tires 35psi all the way around minimum.

Only use TopTier gas. Never ever Walmart gas.

Another thing that we've all forgotten (including me) is an O2 sensor. Sometimes they don't throw a CEL even when bad. If you can use a scanner that shows live data, watch the voltage. Voltage should have a nice, even oscillating voltage with nice high/low arcs. If it's choppy or low arcs, replace them.

Replace all as a set. 4 of them IIRC.
