I've got a 97 EB with V8, and I live in the Big Bend region of West Texas.

It rides on Dunlop LT Radial Rovers.

I believe the shocks are original as came on the truck, and the truck has 70K on it...

My Explorer seems to ride rough, compared to my work truck, which is also an 97 Explorer AWD/SOHC/70K miles...

It just seems to be a lot more wallowy, ride, and I seem to feel the every crack in the road..

I've done the "bounce on the corner" test, and the truck is so heavy, I can't even move it much to see if it will bounce more than once.

At about how many miles should shocks be replaced?

What are some other ways to determine if they need replacing?

Thanks in advance.......

70K MI on factory shocks? well past time to replace them IMHO... you will wonder why you waited so long.

i've got 53K mi on my truck, and the shocks GOTTA GO! i'm just trying to decide between Bilsteins or Rancho 5000s. and i gotta sell the old truck to afford some changes to the new truck.

As far as when should the stock shocks be replaced, my answer would be 0 miles. The stock shocks are so inferior to almost any aftermarket shock that I feel you should replace them as soon as you can.
