How close have you been to running out of gas?

i was on E and already drove for at least 20 miles on E and when i got to a pump after waiting for one i put my truck into drive and literally 5 feet away from the pump my truck dies completely stalls i keep starting and trying to get closer no luck it was so embarrassing i had to get a little red can fill it up to put into my truck just to start it to move it forward to fill the rest up. the best part of all it had to be on labor day when everyone was at the station filling up their cars and boats.

So I was getting ready to get gas the check gauge light was on so I figured I have time till the fuel light was one so me the wife and kid had to stop by the post office to mail my unemployment check right as I pull up the drive way total loss of power I put it in park and try to restart with no luck. So I called my mom cause she was the only one able to get in my garage to get my gas can and fill it up 10mins later she comes to get me going again. boy I felt stupid I couldn't even roll fully in a stall.

ha me and my friend needed to head into the city real fast to drop off his truck and there are two different highways that run alon eachother so we are racing there on seperate highways and my check gage light comes on with about 20 miles to go. i pick up my phone and keep it in my hand ready to make the call. it never died i pulled out onto the other highway a mile ahead of him and pulled into the gas station as it sputtered to the pump! aweseome! ha

Huh so it seems as though the computer stating your current miles till empty is correct. Well assuming its accurate I have never even seen a 0 let alone anything lower than 25 miles till empty. I do not intend on testing the computer for as we all know our vehicles have the arrow dynamics of a brick and the fuel economy of the space shuttle therefore I don't want to test it. I assume you would all agree to me saying that no one wants to make that phone call to AAA saying "I ran out of gas can you help me?"

i rolled into the gas station... good times... i have a broken gas gauge... thought i had more.

Been on the side of the road twice... First time, had a bunch of stuff to do before close of business, and thought I would make it.... Nope. Dead on the side of the freeway, 3 miles from the nearest gas station in a small town. Called roadside assistance, and while I was on the phone, tried it one last time. Lo and behold, it started.... Ran it as long as I could stand it, got down the off ramp, blew the stop sign at the end, (was in the boonies), goosed it down to the end of that road (about 1/2 mile, hung a left and coasted into the gas station where it stalled.

Second time, I had dropped my jet ski off at the dealership for a recall and was heading home via the scenic route, looking for a new house to buy. Got turned around, couldn't find a gas station after the light came on, and it died on a 2-lane country road about a mile and a half from the nearest station. I hoofed-it to the station, bought a small can and 2 gallons of fuel, and hiked back. Luckily it was a nice summer day.

I saw someone mention something about he the gauge light that comes on when you get low on fuel. I thought i remembered reading in my manual that it is supposed to come on when there is 2 gallons of gas left.

I have ran out twice and sputtered into a gas station once. thats what i get for being a procrastinator. First time i was in a old beater car that i bought for about 800. ran out of gas on my way home, not realizing i was almost out until it started sputtering. Couldnt find a ride home, so i walked a good 1 to 1 1/2 mile, found about a gallon of gas in the garage, walked back to the car with that, put it in and guess what? Car still DIDNT start, guess it wasnt enough gas, so i walked back to the house and waited till i could get a ride for gas. Second time i was in the explorer and thought i could make it home after work, almost made it back. pulled into a closed gas station and called my gf for a ride to get gas.

2nd day of having my LS, got back in town from a 124 mile trip (Leaving, the computer said 116 til E) got back and it said 2, closest gas station was about 1.75 miles down the road, but I dont like that one, so I risked it and went the full 2 miles to get good gas haha.

Industry standard is approximately 10% of the tank's capacity. It will vary a little based on how the vehicle sits, capacity of the tank (obviously), the algorhythm used to eliminate the *slosh* readings... But roughly 10% of the tank's capacity has been the standard for some time now.

One time I was so drunk I forgot to put gas in the 'Star and ran out of gas right in front of the police station. Lol luckily I had a small can of weedwhacker gas in the back from my second job and I dumped that in there and got the heck outta there!!!

not if your drunk and driving a vehicle...usually they frown upon that i believe...

One time in my old Sport I put in 17.8 gallons in a 17.5 gallon tank

I dont really pay to much attention to the actual gallons I put in, but Ive filled my 92, to where the needle goes another QUARTER INCH past the end of the F line.

Ive been low on cash the last week, so barely been goin anywhere, but I put 6$ in sunday night, gas stations about 4 miles from home, then went to pick my gf up, went to school, dropped her off, went home, went to work, and etc back and fourth between work, school, home, and her house alot, and today finally decided to fill my tank up, went to the Krogers station, I work there and get .50 off a gallon, the whole trip, my gauge was below the red on the E line but I was determined to make it! And I did :D filled my tank for 33$ :D (Talking about the 92 here)

The other day I drove with the fuel light on for 24 miles. I didn't know it would go that long...

What a nightmare.

This reminds me of an oh so perfect night. I had made plans to purchase a 83 S-15 from an old friend for $200. I picked the battery up from her grandfathers house then drove with a friend to a place called 'The Valley' to pickup the truck at midnight in a place that cops don't bother going to

I put the battery in and two gallons of gas, lost the gas cap in the darkness and headed home. This place is all hills, curves and only has gravel roads. So I'm driving along and it seems the trucks missing or cutting out, I just figured since it had sat for some time it would be fine after I drive it for a few days.

Silly me never thought maybe it was low on gas :(
So I'm making my way home on the 20 mile drive with the truck missing and once I got about five miles from town the thing dies, I coasted it back off the highway into someones yard (around 1 am now). Then hop in my friends car to head back to my house to pick up this trucks previous owners 2000 malibu and head to a local gas station to fill my gas can up and head back for the truck.

Well the gas gauge in this mailbu doesn't work but she said it had gas in it. (A fuse was blown). I get no less the 100 yards from where the truck is sitting to run out of gas in her car. :(

So picture someone standing next to a car at 1:30am putting gas into it from a can. Also there was no way of pulling the car off of the highway where I just so happened to run out of gas at for the second time in one night. So I was standing in one lane while I emptied my gas can into the car in the other lane (two lane highway). Then I headed back to the same gas station as before to refill my can and put more gas in her car just to head back to the truck to try and get it home.

Long story short finally got the truck back on the road and to the gas station to get filled up. At this point little ole me is so upset I somehow managed to leave twin black marks while leaving the station in a truck with expired plates, No insurance and me having just gotten out of jail having no ID on me what so ever.

A few days later.

Then my friends husband who I guess was not informed or misinformed found someone who would pay $400 for the truck and was nice enough to report it stolen after I had just gotten out of jail because someone else reported their truck stolen while I just so happen to have been driving it after I had been drinking at the ripe old age of 20.

The deal I had made was to pay payments for this truck...

So lesson learned the hard way several times..
Never trust girlfriends, Never buy vehicle without getting something in writing, never drink and drive and when being pulled over slam on the brakes and pull over ASAP or they may say you were fleeing also.

Yeah what a week.

I really don't understand why some of you guys insist on trying to squeeze every last mile out of a tank of gas. It's not like you have dump what's left in the tank before refilling. As soon as my gauge starts getting below 1/4, I go to the gas station next chance I get. And I hate pumping gas, so I fill it up all the way so I don't have to go back as often. Also, when it comes to the Explorer, the gas gauge doesn't work, so I pretty much HAVE to fill it so I know how much is in there. Never ran out of gas once in any of my vehicles.

I hate pumping gas too. Thank god I live in NJ! lol.

I have been filing up after I use a 1/4 tank, it feels like Im paying less to fill up haha.
