I have a '98 XL OHV with no "power" anything.
Seems I have a droopie turn signal stalk (still works ok)and the auto-cancel feature is not working.....so the question is, how difficult is it to get the steering wheel off? I don't want to set the airbag off, and I'm unsure how to get to the steering wheel nut as well.

Not to hard with the right tools, first thing to do would be to unhook the battery & let it sit for about 15 mins before doing anything to the air bag. Remove the 2 screws from the back of the air bag & unhook the connections & remove the air bag & set it aside in a safe place. Remove the torx bolt from the center of the steering wheel (not sure of the size), & using a puller remove the steering wheel. Be careful to remove the clock spring connections from the wheel. That is how I did it on our 99 Sport.

first of to change the multifunction lever, there is no need to remove the steering wheel itself. The trim pieces behind the steering wheel will come in two by removing a few bolts and then you have clear access to the stalk.
