I just bought a totaled 2004 Mercury Mountaineer AWD 4.6L and I am using it as a donor vehicle for my 1956 Ford F100. I am using all the running gear-- frame, engine, suspension, transmission, and pretty much everything but the cab itself. It got hit in the rear hard, but high, which did not affect the frame. I called TDZ detail zone for a wiring harness that would get rid of the PATS (Passive anti-theft system) and they would reflash my ECM and I found out that Ron Francis' webpage was wrong about the years. They do not make a wiring harness and cannot reflash my computer for a 2004 Ford 4.6L due to the three connectors, 2003 is the cut off year. The reason why I want to get rid of the PATS was so I could use a different ignition, steering column, and dash gauges. Plus I read some forms where the anti-theft system was a pain!
I went down the road to Radrides by Troy (custom car builder) and told them my problems. He suggested for the ignition switch to just find out the resistance value from the key, which should be anywhere from 1000 to 50000 omhs. Then go to Radio Shack and buy a omh's resistance resistor that matched the resistance value in my truck. He told said to wrap the resistor up with tape so the computer won't detect anything. And another thing he told me was call MSD and get a "MSD controller traction control only to eliminate factory control module." He said that with this disabled I would be able to spin all four tires. haha!
Back to my question, if it isn't all that hard to convert my 2004 engine to a 2003 engine I would do it. I am thinking that all it entails is buying a 2003 computer and also buying a TDZ wiring harness. That way I could have them reflash the 2003 computer to remove all the extra sensors and PATS. Here in Ohio the restrictions are pretty relaxed as far as I know. If you want the webpage for the wiring harness it's detailzone.com or go to Ron Francis' webpage and they will direct you to the wiring harnesses.
I am excited to have an All-wheel drive 1956 Ford F100! I just want it to run correctly and not pieced together with tan mercury steering column and mercury gauges while the rest of the interior is black. If you have any other ideas that would help me out, I would be more than glad to consider them.
