If there are no visible bolts on the back (you just see them on the front)
the rear is like a ball and socket type fit.
Just press it back on when you're done

will try. thanks!

I love this place!

So. My 2002 V8 Explorer just blew some kind of hose, seal, or whatever, such that coolant is all over. I can't tell where it's coming from because of that cover.

Looking at it, there are four "things" that appear to be holding the cover in place.

But on mine, they all seem to have square drive heads. Hmmm. Never seen that before!

Edit:

Here's a picture of the cover:

Here's a shot of the odd nuts that held the cover on:

Those nuts' square heads are 1/4". I just used a ratchet with a 3/8 to 1/4 adapter to remove them. The ball detent held onto the nuts nicely.

With the cover off, it seems like there's coolant all over the top of the engine. I'm suspecting the intake manifold or it's gasket, but that's for another thread, I guess!

Damn! I hate it when people don't complete a story. Did gshep12 get the engine cover back or not? What went down?

I've seen a couple people have their engine covers jacked by Ford. I don't understand why.
I'd go ballistic. Some pos calling me a liar or stupid wouldn't go well. Everyone within a 100 yards would know there was s problem. Now I'm just irritated because I don't think the cover was....recovered.

Jim there's a heater control valve on the left side of engine when facing vehicle that went on my last year. spewed anti-freeze all over, I can't recall if it would be visible with cover and air cleaner intake hose blocking view, check that...I never replaced my cover, stopped doing business with dealer that was responsible for farming out warranty work... they thought I was a flaming lunatic that didn't know what I was talking about, screw them...gave them good business 4 new exploda's and 1 expedition, they gave me their A$$...

No, chalked it up as a loss, the cover wasn't worth battling over...Stopped doing business with that dealer All American Ford in Hackensack, NJ after the next incident where their GM had the audacity to tell me I was nickel and diming them because I didn't want to pay $325 to diagnose and replace a thermostat, didn't loose any anti-freeze either... I arranged for purchase of 5 new vehicles including 2 exploda's I purchased, guess my green wasn't green enough; didn't need them, their loss, gave them my...

Thank you for the tip. It turned out to be something else, but I still appreciate you taking the time to help me. It might fail on mine in the future, and anyone else reading this thread might find that theirs has exactly the problem you described.

Your experience with that dealer shows the difference between the loyalty we expect our repeated business might earn, versus the way some of these outfits really operate. What a pain. I wouldn't do business with the jerks again, either, if I were you!

Buying a vehicle is a big deal for most of us. I guess selling one is just a minor part of a dealership's day. It's a shame they weren't able to put themselves in your place and then think about what real customer service would be. But I've known some car dealers who were incredibly arrogant and conceited. Sounds like that GM falls into that category.

4.6L Engine

Hi thanks for the pics. The 4.6L is my engine, however where the 4.6L emblem is on the engine there use to be a large black cover of some sort on my 04 Limited. I didn't realize there was a 4.6L emblem because you couldn't see it; it covered the injector parts as well; that is why I couldn't get my hand underneath in order to clean out the acorns. Between the cover and the injectors it was impossible to get in there. I was told by two opposing dealerships that the cover was not put on all the 4.6L. The 4.6L that you pictured has access to remove acorns off the top of the engine by sticking you hands in and picking them out. My engine looks identical to that now because the cover is gone. I tried to explain to the Service Mgr. at the dealership that the acorns were there for some time because I couldn't reach in to remove them due to the cover on top of the engine and the injectors. You may be wondering why I would want my cover back; its about principle. You bring your vehicle in for service, it should be returned in the same state; meaning all of its parts that it was received with. No modification should be made without the express permission of the customer. The Mgr. agreed to order the cover if I can come up with the part number. I went to the opposing dealer and they know exactly what I'm talking about and they said they don't recall the part #. They had to email Ford Motor one other time for an escape that has that similar cover on top of its intake manifold. The cover was not listed in their parts catalog in that instance. They had to contact Ford for it. This is my situation as well.
I just wanted to see a picture of a 4.6L with the cover I'm talking about. I'm inclined to think that they may have put this cover only on the Limited and possibly the Eddie Bauer model.
If there is anyone out there with one that has the cover; please post a pic of it.
