How do I Correctly fit a Throttle Position Sensor in 2000 4.0L

Hi,

I have tried about 5 times to fit a new throttle position sensor but I'm unsure as to the correct method. This is what I have tried:

1. Just screwing it on and hoping the bar engages correctly.
2. Putting it on 45 degrees back and then rotating the sensor to guarantee contact with the bar.
3. Puting it in and turning it one turn.

REading the Haynes manual it suggests that for this year it is not adjustable. All it says in the book is "make sure it engages correctly" it does not tell me what is correctly.

In all cases the computer seems confused becuase I now get problems I did not have before like no gear kickdown on acceleration and very rough gear changes.

I know that the sensor is not getting installed correctly I just can't seem to get any info anywhere on how it should be put on.

If I remember correctly from installing my throttle body. There is really only two ways that it will go on. The tail should general face toward the rear of the vehicle. As for fine tuning it grab a multimeter, ...... well hear this is the easy way. Read this then go get yourself a multi-meter.

Siteprocentral, you have to install the TPS a few degrees offset, so that it will engage with the throttle valve tab. Then rotate it slightly to line up the bolt holes. When it's inserted correctly, it'll have a slight tendency to "spring" away from the bolt alignment. As dreamer says, the wiring points toward the firewall.

Make sure the new part # lines up with the old one. I had Ford Parts Network send me the part for the SOHC when I have an OHV. And guess what, they look identical, but one turns clockwise and the other turns counter-clockwise.

I think I may have a faulty sensor, as I have tried the suggestions above. Unless I'm supposed to clear the codes after installing. Should I remove the negative terminal to force the computer to learn again? or is this of no consequence?
