I believe you have the 4R55E

Any distiguishing marks on the tranny itself that will tell me what it is? Stampings?

It's a 4R55E like ssikora said. It's a newer version of the Ford A4LD. Dunno about any marks the tranny might have. It has part numbers. But it's a 4R55E, 4 speed automatic, 4th being overdrive.

4 = 4 speed
R = RWD?
55 = 550 ft/lbs Maximum input torque, measured at the tranny input shaft (torque converter output shaft)
E = Electronically Controlled

Anyone know the multiplyer to figure out the torque converter's output shaft torque ... doesn't the torque converter multiply the engine torque by a prefixed amount?

Where do you get those meanings ????? fastcougar??
is there something like that for the A4LD ?

Got them from an internal Ford document outlining all of Ford's Dead Link Removed.

BTW, the A4LD isn't listed because it's only drivetrains for 2001, but according to the Acronym chart on page 39,

A = Automatic
4 = 4 speed
L = Lockup
D = Drive

Which do I have? 91 xlt 4wd

A4LD

Automatics for V6s:
91-94: A4LD
95-97 1/2 (approx) OHV: 4R55E
97+ SOHC, 97 1/2 (approx) + OHV, 5R55E
