How do I take out my cd player??

R

rock883

I have a clarion cd player in my 91 explorer. I am buying a cd changer, and I want to install it myself. I went down to Best Buy and they told me that I would either have to go buy some keys from the Ford dealership which were $35 bucks. Or they could do it for $12. I know there has to be some way that I could take it out myself, or am I wrong? Thanks for any help.

Rock883,
I'm surprised that the Ford dealer in your area carries the keys to take out the stereos. The dealeres here in Denver do not have them. 35 bucks seems pretty steep for these tools. I found a set a couple of weeks ago at Autozone for $2.99. They had them behind the counter in their radio section and I had to ask someone for them. If you find a set, get em.

As for removing the stereo, the keys make life much more simple.

$2.99 at Autozone, wow, I think I'll have to go with that. Where do these keys go into?

Rock, if your stock stereo is much like most other Ford stereos, on both sides of the stereo you have two holes. Basically what the keys do is go into those holes at the same time and expand enough so you can pull the stereo right out. As is my understanding Dead Link Removed. Most stereos have these holes, some are just behind removable faceplates or they are slits (long narrow keys like my Kenwood has) instead of holes. Hope that helps.

Matt thank you so much for sayin that thing about those slits, I remembered that there were some little "peices of metal" that were included with the stereo. I just went out and took it out for the hell of it, thank you so much for sayin that. Now I can get this thing put in.

If you dont have a shucks, or they dont have the keys, then I saw them at a GI Joes once, but they were like $12, I think.

I got mine out by shoving 4 small allen wrenches (coat hangers will also work) into the holes. Then, I let the glove compartment swing all the way out(just push in the sides), and pushed the unit out from behind. It's cheap and easy, just the way I like it Dead Link Removed.
