96 eddie bauer explorer
hi everyone, i have a 96 eddie bauer explorer. when we first got it everything worked fine. it has the factory phone in it. so whenever you are listening to the radio and press the button for the phone, it would mute the radio and the word "phone" would display across the radio face. everything is stock on this vehicle. now the problem. a couple of weeks ago, when i would start the vehicle, it would automatically go to phone mode and you cant turn it off to listen to the radio. the only way i can get the radio to play is to remove the fuse for the radio, phone, and overhead display. wait for the radio to start working and then put the fuse back in. this is really getting to be a pain in the butt. is there some way to disable the factory phone, or does any body at least know where it is located? thanks in advance

I didnt know explorers came with phones?!?

a very few of them did, but they are worthless now because you cant get service to use them anymore because they use an analog signal and now everthing else uses a digital signal

how do you know if yours has one?

I think i remember reading something about them somewhere...I have a 95 XLT would it have one? (JBL system)

IIRC, it should be near the factory subwoofer and audio amplifier, behind the rear passenger quarter panel trim cover.

I remember seeing an RJ-45 jack in the center console of a 95 EB for the phone. If yours has the phone unplug it there?

On the center console where the coin holder is you can see 2 spots where you could attach the phone mount, the jack there will only unplug the headset, the phone itself I beleive is in the rear.

I wanted to get one of those mounts to mod it just so I had a lace to put my cellphone on, it's cool because you open the console, swing the holder out and close the lid

actually the factory phone is a hands free unit and it is voice dialing only. the is a small black button on the front drivers side pillar. you press the button and a voice announces "name please" and then you say the name of the person you are calling. i think the dealer has to program in the name and numbers.

when it is working correctly. when you start your vehicle you hear a phone tone for about 2 seconds, the radio displays "phone" and then the radio turns on. thanks for the help i will look for it tomorrow when i get off work

Don't think that's true. My 96 limited has the phone. The phone definitely has a keypad and the manual lists instructions for programming it. And I can dial numbers...but nothing happens. Just displays "NO SER"

sounds like a completely different set up, i will try and post pics of my setup tomorrow
