Hey Guys, how do you know when you need a new battery? My battery charge meter on the instrument cluster shows 30%-40% above the negative (-) sign. In the past, it would show in the middle of the positive and negative sign.

When did you guys replace your battery?

I know when my Explorer wont start

Just kidding, I would take your battery to a local Auto Zone or something similar and have them test it for you.

They can also test your alt. output at the same time.

Isn't the batter meter on the instrument cluster just an idiot light?

Anyways...when my battery is low, my headlights seem to be dim and it takes just a little while longer to start. Take your truck to Autozone or Advance Auto and let them check your battery. The test is free so there're no risks.

run your truck for a while, then get a volt meter and check the battery voltage. If its around 11 your battery is probably shot. also a possiblity your alternator is dead...i'd have autozone check that for ya

Use a hydrometer....if your battery has removable caps...then buy a chapie hydrometer. If it is a seled battery, it will have a green eye in the top.....the green eye tells you if it is still good..

Best simple test I know of, that has been relatively reliable is to check voltage. It should be putting out about 13-14 if good. 12 or so is fair, but could be a problem. Less than 12 and it is likely bad.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I'm just gonna stop by an AutoZone and have all the electrical components checked out.

You'll need a new one as soon as you buy a winch - the old one just won't cut it!

For me, the indication is when I leave my stereo on for 1/2 an hour with the engine off and the car wouldn't start afterwards. I do this a lot when I work or wash the inside of my truck. Also, after 5 years, I know its about time to change before it leaves me stranded.
