1993 XLT Explorer 4x4
Hey guys,

I have a 1993 Explorer XLT 4x4 with 3.73 gears and the towing package. I was wondering, if I am towing no more than 2000 lbs. what is a safe speed I can consistently travel at on the highway while in "D"? Of course this is assuming I change my tranny fluid on a regular basis. Thanks guys.

I believe the owner's manual specifies 55 mph when towing, but in practice I would think that going the posted limit should be fine as long as the trailer tows well.

as fast as it feels safe or your truck can easily cruise. My 91 tows a 2000 boat at 70 pretty easily on the freeway.

i was towing a trailer last night on the highway at speeds between 65 and 70 with no trouble. The trailer had nothing on it so I even towed in overdrive. If you are going to be on a expressway for a long time I would recommend towing in overdrive unless you notice it shifting a lot. With the 3.73 gears I find once i get past 65 it won't shift oput of overdrive unless you really peg it and with the way the gas prices are I think it will be ok using overdrive.

I would suggest a tranny temp gauge if you will be towing this trailer often. I have a Safari and I pull a 6x10 box trailer with it. It is as tall as the van and weighs 1400 lbs. empty. I can tow it at 75 mph in overdrive but the temp gets up to 220. That temp is acceptable especially with synthetic fluid. I am also running a cooler. My point is that it may seem that everything is fine when you are towing it and the temp maybe 250 + and then your tranny is toast. Regular operating temp is 180 - 200. Towing something once across town won't hurt it. Just be easy on it.

I do this all the time

you can tow at 55 mph with a traler with one axle. 65-70 with a dual axle trailer. However if you want to tow something heavy like a large boat or a mustang camaro or old heavy car I reccomend purchasing an electric brake set up for your truck and trailer. Heavy loads are hard on your explorers brakes without assistence.
