Just wondering would my 100% stock explorer sport 4.0L SOHC engine would match up agains't friends rice rockets (97 accord V6 auto, and a 2000 accord 4cylinder vtech 5stp).

I know the explorer has about 200HP compared to like 160 on their cars, but i weigh a lot more.

i have no clue, but it would be fun finding out first hand!

just calculate the cars' power to weight ratio. Your truck is at least 4,500 lbs, their cars are at least around 3,000 lbs (these figures are just my estimate). Their cars are going to beat your Explorer. On the positive note, this gives you a reason to mod your truck.

i took my moms 96 to over 105 then the governor kicked in

I just reread the post, and actually, a 2wd Sport weighs in at about 3800 lbs which would put his power to weight ratio very close to the ricers. Who knows, you could beat them. But hey, even if you don't... :-)

Yeah both those cars would kill your Explorer. And the stock Explorer tops out around 105-115, the Hondas are definitely gonna beat you in the top speed area.

maybe if you were to race them off road!! hehe!

i have raced many cars with my 98 SOHC XLT and have beat at least half of them. ive beaten a mustang and a few ricers, was beaten once by a lady in a concorde, but its fun. went out late one night and raced a J**P cherokee near my house, hit 113 i assume, governer is at about 107 and i have larger tires. it was fun, but dangerous! not sure if i will do it again. i have a few performance mods, so there are things you can do to beat those ricers!!

Ok, I'll do it.

I think the average members age on this board is sinking fast.... help me out old timers!

I guess I'm gonna be the old fart here (34) and just toss in my .02.

Anyone doing those kinds of speeds (supposedly 100+)in ANY Explorer, much less a modified Ex, is risking their life, and those of anyone else that happens to be on the same road with them. Now I don't particularly care if someone splatters themselves all over the road doing this, but if my wife and kids are around the next bend, I care ALOT.

I'm no wuss, I like to drive fast just like every other red blooded american man.....but I'd much rather do it in a vehicle that's made for it....and let's try to keep it under 85 or so, shall we?

Flame away, but you know I'm right.

I didn't find a '00 4-cylinder Accord, but I did find a '99 2.3L VTEC Accord with a 5-speed manual that ran 16.570 in the 1/4 mile @ 85.96 MPH. It was bone stock with 1200 miles on it. Car And Driver tested a '97 V6 Accord Sedan LX. It completed the 1/4 mile in 16.0 sec @ 88 mph. I've ran my '97 4x4 Sport at Firebird here in Phoenix when it was bone stock with 50K miles on it. It ran 16.374 seconds at 83.04 MPH. Since your 2WD weights about 200 lbs. less than my 4x4 you should be a pretty even match to the '97 V6. You should easily beat the '00 4-cylinder. The only way to know for sure though is to try it out, preferable in a legal environment such as a 1/4 mile dragstrip. Don't worry about being the slowest one there, you would be surprised at what people bring to see what it will run. Nothing like two F-350 Deisels running down the track topping out at 65 MPH.

Also guys, acceleration isn't only a function of horsepower and weight, but you also have to take torque into account. Even if your hp to weight ratio is almost the same as those cars, your torque will most likely be much higher than theirs, helping your take off and acceleration.

BTW, I actually do agree with Sundown. I'm a hypocrite, I know. Actually, the only time I go more than 10 miles above the speed limit is when I know the street very well, have great (more than 1/4 mile) visibility of the road ahead and good visibility of any type of intersection or pedestrian way, and favorable weather conditions. I will always risk getting a ticket or risk losing a race rather than risk lives. Actually, I don't race than much; I just drive a lot and like to tell stories. Also, traffic on some of the highways here frequently moves above 90.

My dad's other car, a '98 Accord EX-V6, is fast!!! A little tap on the accelerator, it jerks and speeds off. I tell ya, that thing is fast! I did a WOT when I was going into the highway one time, I reached 75 mph before I was actually ON the highway. Since mine is a bone-stock OHC V6 except the k&n air filter, there's no way that I can beat anyone, but off-the-line, there might be a chance b/c I have the 4.10 LSD and the torque available from the engine.

thanks

thanks a lot for the reply's i was just wondering, if i do try this, it will be when the roads are empty and never hit above 80. (i just wnat the take off basicly, i know this cars are not meant for high speeds , no reason to ahve me flip.

sundown, i work at night and there isnt to much traffic @ 11:30 and normally there is no one near me except the ricers that go flying past me. oy yeah at this time the CHPs and local cops go 75-85 on the motorcycles
