how is everybody mounting winches?

i saw there was a thread on hiding a winch under the stock bumper, but all the pictures were outdated and gone.

i bought a universal mounting channel from harbor freight, saw another in a thread someone bought from summit that looked EXACTLY the same.

but when i took my bumper off yesterday, there was no way to mount it to the frame, was i supposed to drill through the plate+frame? i know most threads said i'd have to raise the radiator, but i couldn't even get that far.

i'm considering buying a winch bumper, but it's obviously expensive and i'd prefer to do it after the winter in case of an accident.

I mounted the winch on my 95 behind the bumper. I made a plate that mounted between. attached the fairlead to the bumper. How ever I had to do some modification to the lower grill for the lever. The plug was accessed under the hood.
