I recently bought a 93' Explorer 4 door 4x4 with the 4.0L V-6 with 110,000 miles. I was told by several people that the eginines last a while so i did buy it. But now i'm wondering just how long my engine will last. It had the tranny replaced about 2,000 miles ago but other then that i don't know of any major problems with the Explorer. It doesn't have any modifications to it... yet. I was hoping that someone here can give me an idea as to how long i can expect this engine to last, and about how much it would cost to replace it.. thank you

Matt,
Rick (admin) and I have the same year and model as you. We have about 132,000 miles on it. Believe me it has definitely not been highway miles. Just look at the pics. We have had to rebuild the tranny also. As far as I know the engine is still doing fine. I'm sure Rick will add more when he sees the thread.

I would say you can get well over 200k out of the 4.0. Its a good engine and if well taken care of should last a long long time.

We have a 1992 XLT with a 4.0. We just hit 190k miles. We replaced our tranny at around 150-160k miles. At 180k the head gasket started to leak so I replaced that (12 hours to do). Other than that the motor has done well. There is a thread around here called high mileage explorers and there are many people with over 200k miles.

The '92 I bought from my parents has 186K on it and still has no signs of power loss. It also has the original alt. and water pump on it and my tranny is still holding strong. They are mostly highway miles and the thing (knock on wood) has yet to have any major problems. I plan to look at obtaining a new engine and rebuilding it at around 200K, but I don't plan to install it until the one in the truck know retires.
