Bought a 2017 Ford Explorer 2 months ago and the ptu and transmission need replacing luckily my loan included an extended warranty so all I owe them is $120. The dealership near me has had the car for almost as long as I have and I am just wondering, how long it should take a mechanic replace these parts as it was supposed to be done by 5pm today but I called them and they said it won't be with no reason why. They have had the parts since last Thursday afternoon and don't even update me at all I always have to call them to find out what is going on or drive by the shop and they will call me 10 minutes later to finally update me. Is this normal for a Ford dealer to be slow at giving the the customer information? I have never had an issues with them before when I had recalls done on my 2015 Ford Taurus they always got them done when they said they would be or a day earlier. They have run in to some issues with getting sent wrong parts or ordering more parts that that they should have seen being broken beforehand I just want a rough estimate how long it should take complete a transmission and/or ptu replacement if you have done it yourself or how long did the mechanic take to replace yours once they got the parts in?

Work it out with the service advisor or service manager, that's their job. No one here can answer your question.

Welcome to the Forum.
Keep in mind that all dealerships are independently owned. Therefore it is not unusual to expect different levels of customer service. Although they may have had the main parts, it is also possible that there were other items that were also required. These days, not much falls under "normal" anymore. Good luck.

The original question is how long should it take to replace a PTU. According to my service receipt Ford allowed 5.3 hours of labor for the entire job on my 2016 Explorer Platinum with 29280 miles on it. (see below)

Why your dealership is taking longer is the question you need to discuss with them.

They will drop the subframe which is pretty labor intensive. A lot easier with a lift that's the way to do it though

There are a lot of reasons this could be held up. I can list some but you need to call your service advisor and talk to them. Don’t jump to the service manager unless the advisor is a giant ******

They may not actually have 100% of the parts. It’s not a good idea to start a job until you absolutely have everything you need. I’ve been burned on that

Depending on the warranty that was packaged with your loan, they might be getting jerked around by the warranty company on any number of dumb issues. I’ve had to deal with that run-around too

The tech working on the job could be working on your car in between other jobs of the day and it’s just not finished. This is not at all uncommon so don’t get worked up for nothing

I hate to say this but something could have gone wrong. Like more broken parts. Or a botched job

Like I said, there are dozens of reasons why this could be taking longer than expected.

Call tomorrow a little later in the morning/early afternoon when they, hopefully, aren’t super busy. Ask your sa what the deal is without being a jerk but definitely don’t hang up without a real answer

Thanks this was the answer I was looking for. I also had the same exact issue so I am thinking my bad ptu may have cooked the transmission.

I used to Remove/install Explorer transmissions in less than eight hours, could do the PTU's in about three hours.

You're welcome. This 'cooked transmission' situation also crossed my mind when my PTU failed so I had them check the Trans fluid, they said it was okay. However, not always believing everything I hear at Dealerships I paid for a fluid replacement on my transmission. That was about 18,000 miles ago and so far the ExPlat is running nominal with only 47,000 miles on it, as anyone might expect.

I have an extended, extended ESP warranty that has 1.5 years left on it, after that I'm not sure what I'll do with this 2016 Ford Explorer.

Best of luck with yours!
