I was thinking about an electric fan. I wonder is the stock alt can handle a big huffer.

The stock alternator is fine. You don't need a huge fan. I'd say stay away from the Taxi Crown Vic's and the Mark VIII's. Both inrush well over 100 amperes when the fan kicks on.

I grabbed a fan off a 2000 Mustang chassis that had the 4.6l.
I'd say anything that ran the 4.6l and had an e-fan will be sufficient.

Can't help you with the electric fan usage, but I think the stock Explorer 2002-2005 Alternators are rated for 130 amps.

Cool! 130 amps is great.

But I just got back from the bone yard, and they didn't have anything good. I'll keep looking.

Here's my install thread.

If I do another one, I'll use another fan. One that requires less modification. At any rate, this should give you an idea.

When my fan kicks on the engine only drops 14 RPMs, so the inrush impact isn't much.
'00 Mustang fan inrush was under 60 amps and it runs under 20 amps.

My goal was to have it look stock when done.

I think a 2010 Mustang fan damn near mounts up and replaces the stock upper fan shroud while still looking 'stock.'

Edit: if you don't want to spend 100 bones on a controller, research using a Volvo fan relay setup. I plan on doing that next and have already purchased a couple relay setups. I forget the models and years, but you'll find it using Google.
