this is an invite to compare the decible readings on other explorers in order to gain some tips on power, box position, and overall quality. i have a premier dex-p1r(the smart deck), 4 premier 10's in a sealed box, 12 disc changer, dual red cap optima batteries, dual circuit breakers and fuse blocks, 1100 watt 2 channel bridged fosgate amp pushing the subs, 600 watt amp pushing mids and tweets, fosgate mid tweet combo up front in doors w/crossover (6 inch), 5x7 kenwood excelon's in rear doors. The last competition i attended i hit a 143.1 in class 2 consumer. my box is pointed straight up, its in a metal cage so it wont fly around when im out romping through the desert. i had a fab company build my speaker cage, its bad as hell, it holds my batteries and speakers, i jump my truck and that thing is still sitten stout. if you have prblems with keeping your box or anything in place let me know i'll hook you up with the guy that did mine. i'd like to hear some other things about your explorer's system.

Hey Mike,

I'd like to see photos of the box and the cage as I am getting ready to start installing/transferring the system from my old truck.

Lastly you have me way beat on the db reading. With 260w total I only got up to 127db.

Best regards.

I hit something like 115 or 120, it was awhile back. I just tested it in some guys driveway, don't know how accurate, but I've got no subs. Just mids and highs. It's insanely loud with out them. I'll add a sub this summer. I did sneak my brothers subs, 2 JL12w6, out of his car and hooked them up one day, that was really loud.

Hey what's up? I own a '91 EB 4Door. This past summer I hit 138 Db with only two 12" Orion single voice coil subs and a Kenwood KAC-827 amp pushing approx. 140x2 at 2 ohms. I also have a sony 100x2 amp powering my 4 door speakers(2 stock, and 2 3-way pioneers). Off the sony radio, I'm running an additional pair of 5 1/2 3-way pioneers that sit on the floor in front of the cup holder. I just recently put an Orion HCCA 225r to power my subs. It will drop down to .5 ohm. Its rating is 2x25, but that is a large understatement. My friend has one amp powering 4 12" orions in an S-10 and with the little air space can hit 140 dB. I haven't finished tuning it so I don't know what mine will do.

If you have the speakers face the rear, it allows the sound waves to bounce off the tailgate which will increase the speed or loudness of the sound waves. With four subs It might be possible to set them up like they are on steps. Two on each step. Now each step could be angle at about 45 degrees. this way the box won't block your view. Good luck in the future

I was hitting about 140 before all that smoke started coming out of the deck.

BTW, I would also like to see pictures of that cage.

I have some news for ya'll. I live in Baton Rouge and hang out at a local stereo shop (Davids car stereo) this is where Master P gets all of his work done. I have met all of no limit and i learned a few things. First of all, subs need a reflectence. JL calls for 8 feet. No question, point the box to the back. You add the distance from the speaker to the back hatch, then from the hatch to the back of your head. SUVs are perfect. I have a regular slant face box. I played around with this and found that if you point the slant downward toward the bumper that you get several dbs more. I orignally had mine slanting up toward the back glass.
There was a guy at Davids that had an explorer and he put 3 12w6's in a box pointing back. The sound was unbelievable. The next day he wanted more. He then went to 4 12w3's pointing up. He lost approx 10db's. Then he went to 8 12w3 pointing up and he finally got close to the first 3 12w6's. W3 are the new JL's that are taking the place of the W6's. His brother put the 3 12w6's in a brand new cougar and blew a taillight clean off the car (about 5 feet). He also dislocated the back hatch. From inside the car you could see straight through the car. Hope this helps!!!
