how many gears i have?

i was driving down the road today and i notice that my transmission change 4 times which is 5 gears.

i have a 96 explorer with the 4r55e transmission.

do i have 5 gears or is just 4 gears + overdrive?

The 4 stands for four speed. Remember that the transmission has a lock-up torque converter. Every time it locks or unlocks it will feel like a shift, the RPM's change.

97-up had a 5 speed automatic. 97-2001 had the 5R55E, and 2002-up had the 5R55W.

In your 96 you have 4 speeds, with 4th gear being your overdrive gear. The torque convertor locking up will feel like a shift. Which is probably why you felt an extra "shift" in there.
