HELP: How many is too many.

Hey,

Im looking to buy a used explorer. How many miles is too many to have. Granted nothing has been rebuilt or replaced. Just Wondering?

Looks nice, but 120k is alot. Anybody think its to many?

i've heard that an explorer with a lot of miles is a good thing. that means most of the costly repairs are out of the way.

I don't think 120 on the 4.0 is too much. It is a strong, long lasting engine that many on this board have pushed well past 120,000.
120 on the tranny is different. Find out if it is the original tranny and if it has/ever had problems.
If the tranny has been replaced or has never had any problems, I say go for it. That's a good price for a nice looking '94 with 4wd.

If you take care of em, they'll take care of you. Definately check out the tranny because 120,000 on it is too many for these trannys.

well it is the manual transmission, and that is known to last longer then the auto...

It all depends on the past owner(s) if they changed the oil every 3k miles a v6 should keep on running. My old bronco had 220k and i got it at 130k and the only thing i had to replace was a clutch and do some minor work. As a rule of thumb if it was well taken car of a v6 specially a ford will last.

go for it! sounds like a good price to me. and 120k on a ex is nothing. in fact if i found a deal liek that i wouldnt have gotten my baby. looks sharp.

Looks good to me. I found mine for 3000, with only 104k on it, so there might be a better deal out there. I'd say if you decided to get that one, like they said, check the tranny. Also, after you test drive it, look under the hood. Look for any leaks, cause they might be there. Only reason I say that, is because there ended up being one on mine. Other than that, I'd say go for it.

Oh yeah, and get rid of those running boards and put some rocksliders on there : )

Man you guys pay lots for used cars down there. I was looking in the paper today and i seen a 93 xlt for $5999 canadian. it has 110,000 kilometers( about a third if converted to miles). we also have one where I workfor about the same price. granted everything we sell is crap.....lol

Since it has a manual tranny, I say go check it out. If everything looks good, no major leaks, and runs good, I say definitely go for it!

JUST CALLED

Says he bought used a year after production.

Work done too it since 1995:
-Intake manifold gasket replaced
-Tranny worked on, when under warranty.
(Syncros replaced)
-Clutch replacement

Problems:
-Has a hard time shifting down from 4th to 3rd
(Double Clutches to bypass problem)
-Tranny is on way out.

If the tranny was the only problem, how much to fix it?

Still worth the price fellas?

-Thanks, Blueoval-

rebuild 1400-2000 may be cheaper for a manual. those are quotes i got his week
used 500-1000 again prices this week.

try to get him to come off the price. if he is that willing with info rag on him until he hops a grand and swipe that bad boy.

in fact im willing to bet that a manual would be a lot cheaper.

Says he already lowered price to take in account of repairs

If he'll drop another 1K on the price, get it. That ought to cover the cost of a rebuild on a manual tranny.
If he won't come down on the price, tell him no. Wait a week or two and call back to see if he changed his mind.

If it says anything, a '94 with 4wd and in good shape goes for around $6K here.

thanks for the info. I have a test drive scheduled for saturday, ill keep you posted.

Skip it and move on if he won't come down some more. They are other deals out there.
