I got a 1999 Ford Explorer sport with a 4.0L SOHC and I am having trouble reading the dipstick... I had somebody tell me that it takes 4 1/2 quarts but I think it looks a little low and I dont have a manual. Anyone here know for sure?

just buy 5 quarts , and when it's full stop putting any in, and keep the rest for if it burns or leaks any , , there is a cross hatch pattern on the bottom of the stick,, as long as it is in that area, it is fine,,

Change the fulid and filter. Add five quarts. Start it, let it idle for a minute, shut it down. Wait 5 minuts. Pull the dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert it, pull it a second time, and read it. THAT's your full mark (should be in the cross hatched area).

There is no need to add it to the top of the cross-hatched area. That's just a waste of oil.
