I had a load in my x the other day coming from Home Depot. It was really riding low in the back, kinda woried me. So, I did some looking, and I had about 1000 lbs. in the cargo area. Didn't seem like that would be too much, but after looking at the GVWR on the door and having it (the truck) weighed. My payload is not much over 500 lbs.?! I know it has whimpy springs, but it is still a truck, plus I have Helwig Helpers on the back.
So, how much are these rated at handling? Not towing, just laoded in the cargo area.

I think 1/2 ton ot 1,000 lbs.

At 1/2 ton, this thing was draggin' butt, with helper springs!

I can't remeber, but with my 91 XLT 4door I had 1,200 pounds in a trailer, which probably translates into maybe 200 pounds on the trailer hitch and I must have had 600-700 lbs in the cargo area.

This is max, which to me means its gonna sag alot so you wouldn't want to do it often or for long periods of time, but it can be done.

Look in your owners manual, it should say there. I'll look in mine tonight and see what it says.

Maximum cargo weight is about 900 lbs. Remember that the chassis is very similar to the Ranger. Also remember that full sized trucks cargo capacity comes in 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton before moving up to duallys. Don't be surprised that your Explorer complains at 1000 lbs. when many full sized trucks are only rated to carry that much and they don't have the added weight of the roof, extra glass and extra seat that your Explorer has.

I had 1480lbs in my truck the other day, no problems at all, and in my 95 Ranger XL, 4cyl, 2wd, with 3.45s and a 5 spd I had over 2000lbs, that was a little much for the little truck, but it moved it. Plus I used to load up the bed with fire wood, and then throw a bubble camper on it too, you want to see something draggin, ass, this was a great example:D
