How much did you pay for a rebuilt tranny?

Ok, everyone I'm gonna start a project on this. Me and my tranny guy had a long talk. The computer is the thing that makes it a 5-speed because it adds to o/d to 1st gear (this concept is beyond me, I am taking his word for it). 96 will almost definitely work. 95 is debatable because it is OBD I. However, I think 95's are prewired for OBD II (connector under dash). If this is so, I have a 97 OHV auto computer at my disposal to play with. I will attempt to install it into my 95 and see what happens!

Let me know if it works on your 95. I would definatly be interested.

I'm Sorry, I sitll dont see how to 5 gears out of only 4

Tranny Coolers

I have a 2WD 3Spd +OD, is a tranny cooler still a good idea in my case (97 X)? I don't want this thing bombing on me like my Taurus did.

It's not..it's the overdrive module engauging thus lowering the RPM's. you know that the explorer has a 4 speed tranny, but it shifts 5 or 6 times because of the overdrive engauging. Try driuving a car without overdrive for a while..once you get over 60 it's running at extreme RPM's...the overdrive is not a gear, it is just a unit that enaguges to lower the RPM and make you get better gas milage.

Did you have a early 90's model taurus?? If so I know what you mean. my dad went through 3 or 4 trannies in his.

Anyway yes a tranny cooler would be a great idea if yours doesn;t already have one. There is one for sale in the for sale fourm. I just say it there a few days ago.

Ok now I understand. But it still only has 4 gears and at higher speeds it's the same. but if you did that it would be ****ing alot more in city driving. wouldn it not?

It would feel like it shifts an extra time, but it would only be the O/D module kicking in...and it would only do it between 1st and 2nd gear and who drives between those gears anyway? Normally in town you cruise in third at least

i paid $1200 for a remanufactured tranny and installed it myself over a weekend in the driveway.
ford quoted $2800 for new tranny and install.

Overdrive is a gear! I belive what you are referring to is the lock-up in the torque converter.
What Jason is refering to (by making a 4spd into a 5) is done using the overdrive gear. Basically what overdrive is, is a gear added after the final drive of the tranny. It is a higher ratio than the tranny's final drive ratio therefore it "overdrives" the output and allows the engine to run at a lower RPM than it could if it were running directly from the 3rd gear ratio (normally 1:1). By engaging the overdrive when the tranny is in first it has the effect of adding another gear to the tranny

Ford Dealer did all the work and everything for 2157.52 The remanufactured tranny was 1450 with torque converter
