Just wondering how much you guys paid for a tranny rebuild on your Explorers, and where it was done at (Ford or independent shop). So far I've been quoted $2800 by a Ford dealership (RAPISTS!!!), and $2000 by a tranny shop. I'm still on the search for the cheapest one, I'm not concerned with quality, I just want it done so I can sell this piece.

Around $2800 at ford, and about $2300(w/ shift kit) at an individual owned tranny shop.

Mine was a little over $2600 for a remanufactured Jasper tranny that was installed by Ford.

Mine was 2.750 at ford for a factory replacement..not a dealer rebuild. a rebuild by a tranny shop or by the dealer may not last as long as the factory unit. Also i would look into a Jasper tranny. i didn;t know you could get one for $2,600. i would have done that. those are supposed to be better then stock. Basically all I have to say on this issue is you get what you pay for. my dad learned the hard way...he had 2 Aamco rebuilds and after the second Aamco rebuild went out he just went to ford and got a factory unit there and it outlasted both of the Aamcos. He had this experiance in a 91 Taurus (known for tranny trouble) but when it came time to replace my tranny, the dealer gave us 2 options and my dad said he would do nothing except a factory replacement. Plus the warentee on the factory unit is double that od a dealer rebuind.

$1300 the first time.. by Doug's Transmision in Phx, Arizona.. (normal rebuild with modified valve body)

$1800 the 2nd time.. same place.. I melted some hard parts.. so the core was toast.. (normal rebuild.. new core with modified valve body)

The first rebuild was at 165k miles.. the 2nd rebuild was at 236k miles..

Namitey paid $500 just for the reverse gears. We took the trans out, and installed it, just didn't want to touch the actual inerds.

I normally would agree with that BUT, my ford factory replaced tranny lasted 13 months (1 month over warrenty) and they wouldn't touch it. So far, this one is doing well....but then again....I'm only on about 8 months.

I'm looking for a 5spd auto for my 96. because when i'm on the hwy I want to be crusing at 130kph (about 78mph) at 1500rpm. not to mention the better fuel economy.

Travis,

I like the Jasper tranny a lot too. I got familiar with it really quick; when its going to shift, when I can make it shift, how far I can run it out in a certain gear, etc. Has nice firm shifts when you push it hard. I really like it alot.

If your just gonna get rid of it buy a used tranny.

Were you running an auxiallry tranny cooler? I know for a fact they will extend the life of any tranny. ford knew they had a problem with heat thats why all the newer trucks have stock external coolers.

It is almost not possable to do this. You would need to replace your truck's computer and everything...not to mention the trucks with the 5 speed autos have a revised 4WD system and I do not know if they would be compatable. I thought about it too, but it's really a matter of what gears you have as to the speed on the highway. at 75 mine is only at like 2,400, which is fairly low. My dad's mercedes and my friends mazda are much higher at 75. come to think of it my dad's old volvo and my brother's 98 contour are also higher at 75..i think the explorer has a good highway engine speed.

I disagree, I did it with my 95 Blazer and it had no problems.

Well, good luck man......if/when it works out let me know.

Actually if you have a 96 or newer all you have to do is change to a 97+ computer. If you can get it hooked up your transmission automatically becomes a 5-speed.

Your kidding?! How about 95?

Jason, Where does that extra gear come from?
Is it in the computer or what?
Do you know anyone who has done this?
Sorry for all the questions but inquireing minds want to know.
