Used one of the comparison websites to get mine (gocompare.com) - they are quite an eye opener. Just got a quote for a Smart car - varies between £102 and £536, all for the same cover.

Insurance

MoreThan, 60, full ncb, Hastings, ungaraged, protected bonus, £240.

One tip, never accept the renewal quote from your insurer, they'll generally rely upon inertia and up the premium. Use confused.com and gocompare.com and moneysupermarket.com (yes all three) and then use it for negotiations with your insurer. They'll act really surprised that the comparison website can be cheaper and match it or claim they cannot match it. If they do not match it, and your existing insurer is cheaper on the website, insure for your next year through the website and let your existing policy lapse. These days like all services there is little value placed on loyalty (other than meaningless points) so it's best to always be the new customer. Sad but true!

I am 44 and pay £260 a year, full ncb and live in TW9-Richmond, Surrey. I always shop around, never accept a renewal.

Who's that with mate? I'm due for renewal early next month, 4 miles and 5yrs difference from you and my company offering a price of £490, needless to say I won't be taking that offer. Also have full ncb. Found it's often cheaper wtih some companies to put another named driver on the policy.

Thats with Swift mate, How can it be cheaper to have another driver on the policy? I dont understand insurers- seems in the main they rob us blind as have to have insurance by law. If I can get that price on cover fully comp from them why was tescos quoting nearly 400 quid- and the worst price was Admiral with around 650!
I think they make it up as they go along-
I have windscreen cover, £150 excess, I declined a loan car as we have a second car anyways, that saved a few quid, I also asked to take hi fi cover off as the ford audio is easy to change and I have a choice of two multi cd set ups to drop in if I have to. I dont do much mileage, use the car mainly to go to practice and giggs, under 8K a year.

So my advice is dont accept all the hidden bolt ons, like personal belongins, roof box cover, legal aid etc, ASK questions and decide what level of extras you want- comprehensive cover often gets added to behind the scenes to bump up the profit margins. Also pay in full if you can as direct debit gets interest added to it unless they offer it free be sure to ask about payment methods.

Admiral was the cheapest for me when i did a search on gocompare, but even that was coming in at £380 with wife on the policy, £417 without her. Having LPG will affect the cost as insurers look on it as an engine modification.

It's crazy the variation in quotes, esecialy when the govt sets a level for the cost of insuring a vehicle and any differences are due to the amount of profit each company is looking to make. Quotes i got went from £380 to £1840

36, full protected NCD, Admiral, 2000 Northface £183 per year with an additional named driver (wife) of similiar age.
