Ok, fellow Explorer-nauts... I'm sure this has been answered at least a googol-plex (look it up, Einstein!! :D) amount of times in this esteemed forum. A dozen searches using different keywords brought up zilch.

Seeing that there's a real dearth of places (legal, that is) to go offroading over here, how often should I switch my '97 XLT to 4High or 4Low to keep everything lubricated?

Many thanks! :salute:

Yes, a few times a month on soft turf should be good.

I didn't realize he was using those words at first. I just got the meaning based on syntax. That's funny.

There's no need to switch into 4WD to lubricate anything. Everything is always turning, gear oil is lubricating, the only differance is there's no power being transmitted, it's only free spinning.

So to answer your question, only use 4WD when you need it, not to lube anything.

Yeah no need to use 4wd. But in addition, to mininize the risk, don't engage 4LO unless you really absolutely need the extra torque.

Though they are right that you don't need to at all, it is recommended that you go somewhere where 4x4 is a must on a daily basis. That's what my uncle says and he's a doctor.
