I just bought my 1992 Explorer four weeks ago and while doing the check around the car before buying, looked at the tires. "Yeap, they have plenty of tread and life in them" I thought to myself. In fact, I thought they were almost brand new. They are a really nice set of Goodyear Wranglers
The next day, just out of curiosity, I looked at the side of the tires to see their age. If memory from high school mechanics serves me right, there's a four digit code on the sidewall of every tire showing the week and year when the tire was manufactured. The tires on my Ex read "3600", or the 36th week of 2000
I just want to confirm; are my tires really 15 years old?!? Am I reading that correctly?! That's old enough for them to get a learner's permit! It would make some sense, as the Carfax shows the truck only put on 30k miles in that time.
I think I know the dreaded answer to this, but if yes, would you replace them? They look fine, have loads of tread, and show no cracks or age. However, this being an Explorer, there's that whole tire issue that comes to mind. Being the cheapskate that I am, it's painful to see visually good tires go
