What all is involved in changing out the rear end on a vehicle??
I have a 01 Sport Trac 2wd with the 4.10 Limited slip, I went from 30 inch tires to my new 35s & it still runs good, But I would like more low end, Off the line performance. With the new tires my gear ratio is something like 3.55 or something like that.
How hard is it to swap?
What type would I want?
Would I lose my Limited Slip?
Would my 4.10 LS be worth selling to offset some of the cost?
I ask a lot of ?? huh?
Thanks for any help.

Unless you have changed gears before and have all the special tools it is best left up to a professional. There are alot of precise measurements needed to set up new gears as well as getting them spaced just right so they wont break etc.

Selling your 4.10 gears would be good. I am sure there are alot of people here who would want 4.10's for their own explorer. You can most likley keep your l/s but I suggest an aftermarket unit. The stock l/s wears out easily. Good luck!

You will need a qualified gear shop to do this. I assume you want 4.56 gears. You should probably try Randy's Ring & Pinion to order your gears. I have heard good things about them, and they have a very informative website. And no, I don't think you'll lose your LS. Also, I would be interested in buying your 4.10's.

My 3.27 gears have been a hinderance on the trails before, and I've looked hard for advice on this subject.

What I've heard is much of the same: Unless you REALLY know what you're doing, pay someone else. There are a million things you have to measure and line up and lube and balance. Any one thing missed could cause your rear end to puke it's guts after a thousand miles or even a hundred miles.

It's going to cost me about $1200 bucks to get my front AND rear gears done at a good 4x shop here. That's why I haven't done it yet. So, I just keep dreaming of running 4.10's with a slip-locker... sigh.
