How to Change Oil? :(

My next mission will be to learn all I can about changing the transmission fluid as that is WAY overdue. Then I need to change my breaks in the worst way, but I'm going to wait until I get my new tires and wheels so I can do it all at once. Oh man, there are so many things that I want to do.

You are too cool!

Hey everyone! Sorry for the lack of posts, I have been very busy with work. I did in fact end up doing it! I used a filter wrench because I was too wimpy to get it off with my hands. It sure felt great too. The next day I wanted to do it again but I talked myself out of it :D

Thanks for all of the help. All of the little tips that I got were great. For the record I am 23 years old. Any smart ass comments are more than welcome! I didn't lose the web page as I will forever have it bookmarked haha. Thanks again everybody, I couldn't have done it without you!

Hope you post pics when you have time - (we all knew you'd be back) :D

Transmission fluid isn't too much harder than an oil change, except that there's no drain plug, you take the pan off the transmission. It's a lot less mess on this one than I expected. You'll need a filter kit, with a filter that replaces the one inside of the transmission (you'll see it as soon as you remove the pan, it's attached to the valve body), and a replacement gasket.

Oh, and don't forget, your vehicle will most likely require Mercon V ATF.

Uh-oh. Looks like we hooked a new one folks. :D

Welcome aboard, Matt. :D

How long till he starts asking about what tires will fit under a 3'' body lift? ;)

Yes, I am definitely hooked. I've wanted to be doing this for a long time now but just never had that push. Once I found this site, it changed the way I thought. Everything was broken down nicely in all of those "How To's" and I thought, "Why not me?". I still have to fix my driver side seat belt (female part) and my windshield wipers (they only work on the highest setting). I also need to install my new sound system that I've had sitting around for two years! Does anybody know where I can get a black Ford emblem for the front of my car? Also looking for black grills ect. a lot like MONMIX has going on. I've wanted the all-black look for a long time but those are a couple of pieces I can never find (maybe I'm not looking in the right places).

Oh, as for pics...I'll get on that. I live in Seattle so waiting for a sunny day you just never know...It's a basic black 1997 Ford Explorer with gray, leather interior. Stock sound. Stock everything. But I will surely get pictures up!

search for a thread written by Aldive on tranny fluid swap.
He did a very nice write up some time ago.
I did his exact process twice now and it has tunred out wonderful.

OH !!
Congrats on your first sucessful oil change.
We are all proud of you.

I'll see if I can find the emblem... and there are many grille websites, but let me post them both (emblem and grille). Be right back...

Ahhh I remember those days when I first tried an oil change:confused: I even posted a picture of the drain plug to make sure it was the right thing. Of course I got a couple wise remarks but I persevered. It was a great stepping stone, and within days I changed the catback exhaust, and within months I changed to long tube headers on my Trans Am. When the time came to change brakes, it was like child’s play and now I do all the brake jobs in my family and save them tons of money! Even when my parents hit a deer with the Explorer, I tackled the job on my own! (it isn't perfect, but certainly gets by)

The biggest thanks have to go out to all the great message boards and the members out there. We all learn so much, save so much money, and in addition the incredible personal satisfaction that comes out of doing stuff yourself.

Here is a pic after The Beast won the battle against a deer.

Forgot to mention, the "710" joke is hilarious. At 1st I was completely confused and tried to figure out why the hell it would say 710, but after the earlier post notating it was a joke I nearly fell over.

The black Ford emblems I made. Somewhat easy but has a firly high risk factor with damageing the emblem in the process.
Search "black for emblem" possibly started by Hartman.

The grilles I got out of a Chevy Silverado SS.

Working in an autobody shop yields a lot of opportunities :)
