How to Change Oil? :(

How many ExplorerForum users does it take to change an Explorer's oil?

:p:

Or better yet, how do you drain the engine oil from an Explorer?
Easy -- you remove the fill cap after the vehicle has rolled :D

Been there..done that...

if your going to do this with a "warm" engine you might be ok just using your hands.....i mean like only ran for like 5 min or less. trust me that **** gets hot fast. i mean suff like the cat converter have burned my arms many times. i usually dont have a prob getting the filter off if i did the previous change my self but when im in a hurry like right before a big road trip or some thing i have some one else do it. they usually put it on to tight.....way to tight. and just so you know i have spent 2 hrs like some one said trying to chisel, tap, punch through the filter, channel locks and anything else. but cause of how the filter is placed and the close vicinity of other components nothing will work except the filter socket thing. makes things so much faster and clean.

another tip is the way the oil drain is placed it allows the oil to flow out all over the passenger side lower control arm. makes a big mess. what i use is a sheet of that thin plastic cutting board stuff. i cram one end up into the control arm area and the other end in the drain pan. this makes a nice curve and surface for the oil to hit and flow directly into the pan. no matter waht you do to make it cleanr your your still foing to get it all over your first few times. and as far as disposing of the old oil i found that the big laundry soap containers the 2gall. size are grat they have a wide mouth and a nice handle to carry. i usually have a few of those laying around as most of us do way more laundry that we change our oil.

Oil changing Tips

One of the things you definetly want to check when you remove the filter, is make sure the rubber seal comes off with the old filter. If for some reason it remains on the engine block, oil will be forced out between the old and new rubber gasket while the engine is running and you will be running without oil in the engine.

Don't worry, everyone's nervous when it's their first time. :D

All of the suggestions I've read here are good. I will add though make sure you're using the correct size socket for the drain plug. Many shops don't bother to take the time to do that so they use whatever, and over time the plug got so rounded off that I had to use a bolt-out to get it off. A while back I was so busy with work and school I went to the only oil place I trust and found they replaced the drain plug for me.

And I wouldn't go in without having a filter strap to get the filter off with. Some shops like to gorilla-fist things on, and I've had a time or two getting filters and drain plugs off that shops have put on. Hand-tighten the filter back on and give it just a little bit of a turn with the wrench once you've got it on for good measure. Once again, tight, but no gorilla-*******. ;)

I've done it so much now, that I could do it in my sleep. (In fact, I got up so early to do it one morning, I think I was still sleeping. )

no responce yet......

maybe he is trapped under the vehicle !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude !!!!!!!!!!! Slither out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont even bother with putting it on with a filter socket. if you do though i would hold the ratchet right up close to the filter not at the end.....you would be suprised at how easy it turns holing it at the end and next thing you klnow it on way to tight.

Not likely...

Seemed like MA8 was having a blast here... I don't know how old he is, but when I tried changing oil back in 88, I was spending time in the company of females/gatas, you know? So maybe he's just busy "changing" someones oil.;)

Hey everyone! Sorry for the lack of posts, I have been very busy with work. I did in fact end up doing it! I used a filter wrench because I was too wimpy to get it off with my hands. It sure felt great too. The next day I wanted to do it again but I talked myself out of it :D

Thanks for all of the help. All of the little tips that I got were great. For the record I am 23 years old. Any smart ass comments are more than welcome! I didn't lose the web page as I will forever have it bookmarked haha. Thanks again everybody, I couldn't have done it without you!
