Seeing how its computer controlled the only way to advance/retard timing would be with a programmer. If you are hearing chain rattle, then your tensioner is probably on its way out
Well the 00M12 campaign replaced the tensioner, alot of members have had their timing chains replaced as a preventive effort to make the engine last. If I was in your shoes I'd replace the front & rear tensioners & timing chains.
I suggest you check the right first since if it's bad you'll have to pull the engine. Having the engine out will make it easier to do the left and the front if needed.
