How to find out the CHECK ENGINE light codes??

I have a 1993 Ford Explorer XLT - 4x4 - 4dr - manual trans. with 209,000 miles on her and she still going strong and in really good shape. I've been having the CHECK ENGINE light come on sporadically while driving, the vehicle is not making any noise's or running rough, the light comes on and in a little while goes off. I would like to purchase a device that would allow me to check the codes myself when the light comes on.
#1 Question Can anyone recommend such a device that will check codes on my 1993 Ford Explorer???
#2 Question Can anyone tell me where I can find a list of the codes for my 1993 Ford Explorer???
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated..

I purchased a OBD 1 scanner from AutoZone several years ago and it came with a booklet that listed all of the codes. Here is the new version that displays the codes so you don't have to count flashes like mine.

Thanks Bkennedy, I bought that code reader that you recommended, got it a Walmart today! Now let that light come on! Lol
