How to get my codes?

I had a procedure with my Taurus SHO where i could get codes by jumping 2 pins on a connector, turning on the ignition and watching the check engine light flash the codes.
Is there a similar procedure for a 97 V8 Explorer?

Nope

Your '97 is OBD-II, which means you need a code reader or scanner to get codes.

Sorry to say, he is 100% correct. BUT a code reader is KNOWLEDGE! And POWER ! Consider investing in one. Better yet, a scanner!

There is a new product out now. A little module that pluggs into the OBD II connector and does like three days of engine dataloging. Then you just plug it into a computer with a USB connector. It will also read out codes and monitor your teenagers driving. Interesting idea. Autozone is pushing them at about $100 and a little higher for the delux model. Looks like it could drop a lot lower in 6 months. Can't remember the mfg web site.
