Fake oil pressure guage

Do all explorers have the fake guage/idiot light? I have a 93 and don't drive it much myself. Mostly wifey. But I do drive a 2001 ranger and it does have that fake guage you guys refer to. I'm guessing that 95 and up explorers all have this fake guage. Is it true for the 91-94's too?

ok this is wonderful! I love this site! ther is NO WAY IN HELL Im EVER gonna mess around with all that crap just to know where my oil pressures at..(even though I should) But Its great that I know that I CAN if I want too... Keep it up I love to read it!

Here are some more part numbers for the oil sending unit. Seems that not all places can cross reference part numbers.

On my Neihoff box I have 3 part numbers..

Gen: OP24761
Nei: FF133e
Smp: PS-60

Hope these help someone.. (It took me 3 days to find the right one.. I had him give me the "big book" and I found it that way)

Even if you don't feel comfortable shorting the resister.. Just changing the Sending unit will work. It will still read, but it will read lower than normal and a little slow but it will work (better than the stock one ever did).

Oil pressure jumps around

This is a really interesting thread........

I have noticed my oil pressure dummy gauge jumping around on me.......first I thought it was the sending unti......replaced that TWICE, once with an AUtozone version and then the Ford version...........

I can be sitting in my driveway and it'll jump from the "M" in NORMAL down to the "N" and back with no movement from the vehicle and no RPM change........

Is this simply a bad gauge or what?? I have a family vacation coming up in a month............about 10 hours each way plus driving on the beach..........LAST year, we blew a tranny.............hoping this year is better..........

Does this sound like a problem?? I noticed this, too, after switching to synthetic and I am just about to do another oil change...........should I switch back to regular oil???? Could this be the oil pump?? I notice this jumping at idel and ehen travelling along...........

ANyone??

That is the symptom I get (even with my "real" guage) when my ground connection on the battery is dirty. I cleaned my connections the best I could and it stopped doing it for a few days.. Looks like I need to cable ends (they get corroded very quickly).

Cable ends??

I hear ya........maybe thats it.

I did an oil change just now and then checked......did it during the test drive and then a few times in the driveway...........Had the wife come down and watch the gauge while I wiggled the wire, etc..........no activity at all...........

Hmmmmmmm.

Well, I guess no point obsessing over it.............

Okay, I've wanted to make my guage work properly ever since I realized it was just a dummy guage. I've been too lazy, but finally got the urge to research it and do it.

I got sort of confused while reading this thread. Is all I have to do to make the guage work properly is replace the stock sending unit with the 'Ford sender E4ZZ 9278A'? Then remove the 20ohm resistor behind the guage in the instument panel and put a jumper wire in it's place? This works on a '95+ model?

Thanks.

Yeah, thats all I did and it works fine. Good luck!

Anyone do a write up yet??

This sounds like a great mod. How intailed would those of you that have done it say it is? Has anyone done a write up on this yet with some long term feedback?

Thanks...

Happy New Year

I have mine in for 20,000 miles and it works excellent. The hardes par is removng the gauges and removing the 20 ohm diode. they you have to solder (very carefully so as to not melt the plastic backing) a bridge to complete the curcuit. I can do a writeup on it next week if you guys want more details. Now when my truck is running at highwa speeds the oil gauge is up near the top of the little oil can picture on the gauge and when I sit idling in gear it drops to right below the little picture. When it is cold it stays up higher pressure evn at idle.
Good luck. if you hav any questions e-mail me at Travisn2001@yhoo.om

Yes, please can you write a description of the steps to take, like where the pressure sender is located and stuff? and can i just call ford parts counter and ask for part E4ZZ 9278A?

Ok. I will b driving back to school tomorrw morning so I am in the midle of packing my stuff up. I will do a writeup this weekend or next tuesda (no class that day).
Yes the sender can be bought at ford parts counte or e-mail torrie@fordpartsnetwor.com.

cool thanks!

Sorry for the bad typing....for some reason this dam keyboard doesn't respond as fast as I type....

So how does the oil light react to the new sending unit? Does it still light up if pressure gets too low? ie: Does the light stay on if you turn on the ignition and not crank the engine, but go off when the engine is cranked?

Both the light and gauge still function correctly on mine.

Mike, I should have mine done sometime Wednesday. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm gonna take some pictures if I remember to do so. If you want me to help, just let me know and if I'm free I'll be there.
