Well you won't have to take out the A/C, you'll just have to finaggle it out of the way. But you'll still have to disconnect the vacuum system, radiator hoses, and various other connection.

My recommendation is whatever you do, label the hoses you take off or disconnect. So when the next engine is put in, you just look at the label, and find the corresponding connection and go.

Good Luck

If you want to remove and then reinstall you really should take other things out...

Take out the radiator or it will get hit when the engine comes out..
Pulling the engine fan/clutch helps too...

When we last pulled the engine on our '92 we didn't open the a/c system.. but I did have to remove the condensor.. (moved it up and out of the way).. Our a/c hose runs under the TB.. Stock it ran behind the engine.. with it behind the engine I may have not needed to move the condensor..

For the exhaust.. on our '92 we couldn't get the exhaust pipes off the manifolds so we just cut the exhaust after the y. We had the manifolds off the heads (I could get those bolts off)...

Other than that the only other things I can think of that we "removed" was the air box and other little things above the engine and a few things "on" the engine.. like the upper intake plenum, coil pack etc.. pulling those things give you more room for the chains..

thanks for the help guys i mean thanks alot as long as i dont haft to take off the intake manifold i can manage....ummm how many motor mounts are there and how do i get to them to unbolt them.

I took off the upper plenum.. it just made it easier to get the chain where I wanted it.. its 10mm nuts to pull that off.. oh yea.. the coil pack comes off to get the upper plenum off (at least one bolt)..

As for the motor mounts.. I used an impact socket on one side.. on the other I had to use a 17mm wrench (I think 17.. maybe bigger) and lots of little turns...

i'm unfamiliar with the correct terminology what is the upper plenum

The bright green part on the top of this engine

wow that a crazy good example..... if ya dont mind me asking who painted their engine like that and what was their purpose behind?...... it looks cool in my opinion, but i'm quite sure some wont agree. especially if the explorer itself isnt a crazy color like the engine

I think it is also necessary to remove the hood. Mark it where the hindges connect so it will line up when you reinstall it.

Ahh.. pull the hood.. I forgot about that.. We did that anyway since we couldn't open the hood all the way since it wouldn't fit in the carport with the hood open.

43R1c26,
The engine pic above is actually the one in our X.. When we rebuilt it last time I was going to do the normal paining of the parts since they needed to be painted and painting them white makes it easier to see leaks.

I must have been sniffing too much carb cleaner becuase I thought white was just going to look too bare... Soo, I went nuts a little and painted it different colors.

The heads are now black as one of those green ones (rebuilt) was cracked right from the builder and when I had the heads rebuilt again I didn't have time to paint them before installing them.

Here is the thread I posted when I first reported the paint job... This thread includes pics after it was installed.
