is it the idler at the top or the tensioner pully at the bottom ?

top idler pully ....

the bottom tensioner pully...

the top one(ideler pully) is held in place by one bolt ...to replace it you need to let the tension off of the serpintine belt via the tensioner pully ( the one below)

how do i do that and how do i get it back on because this black hose (idk what it is) i cant get off and my wrench wont fit without it off

oh and yea idler is at the top. if you dont mind explaining that would be great :D THANKS!!!!!

If it's the one on top, the hose in your way is the intake hose. There are two hose clamps at either end, and a smaller hose connected in the middle of it. Release the two clamps and the other hose, and pull it off. It may take a little force. Once that's off, you should have easy access to the pulley.

dont forget to take the tension off of the lower pully ( tensioner pully) to get the belt back on after you have replaced the single bolt holding on the top idler pully .

What is the hose in the motor...if i put it back on wrong what will happen...i need to know this before i take it off

how hard is it to put back on...i could not even break it loose last time....

I assume the hose you're referring to is the one circled in blue?

This is the intake hose, as I said before. There is a hose clamp at each end you must loosen. Loosen those, and remove the smaller hose (circled in green). Pull the hose off one end, it may take some prying with a screwdriver or something to get it off. Once you have one side off, you can twist the other side to break it loose. It's easy to put back on, a light coat of spray lube or something will help.

the intake hose like develboy said? the intake hose is just a big piece of plastic that connects from your air box to the top of your engine (throttle body...the thing that has cables running to it ) both are held on by big hose clamps ....just remember that there is a smaller hose that is near the air box
(this hose runs from the intake tube to the motor oil filler neck.....just pull it off as well)...........

undo both clamps at both locations and if your have a difficult time trying to remove the intake tube spray some wd-40 around the rubber grommet to help loosen the seal (if it's never been off then years of heat has glued it on there)use a small screwdriver (flathead) to help you pry off the tube from the engine and air box locations.

set aside the tube once you have it off and try not to get dirt in the tube ...since it will have to be reconnected to the engine ,just remember to shake it out real good before installing it because if you get debrie in there it's now after the air filter and the dirt will be sucked directlly into the engine it's self and not filtered ;).

this should give you enough room to install the ideler pully .

don't forget that when it comes time to put the belt back on that the "tensioner pully ...the one below ) goes counter clockwise to take tension off so your able to get your belt back on .

hope this was not to confuseing , hope this helps ya out .

edit ...looks like devel boy beat me to it

my god you guys are great! ill try it in a bit and yea its the intake hose i was talking about XD on the tentioner do i loosin the bolt in the middle of it and will it spring back into place or do i have to FORCE it into posision again...there is no way ill be able to force it back if i have to do it :( if it just popes back into place then ill be fine :)

You don't need to loosen anything on the tensioner. If you look at it, there is a 3/8" square hole in it. You can put a 3/8" ratchet or breaker bar in that hole and rotate counterclockwise to loosen it. While holding the tension, slide the belt back on and release it. It will spring back into place.

so did you buy a new pulley ?? if the bearing is bad putting it back on isnt going to help you said it fell off ?? or have i missed some thing here

Just looked at the pully and if the berrings are the little ball things in the inside of the pully there is a snapped part...can i still drive on that?

is the tensioner pully now bad ? or are you talking about the idler pully in your last statement? whats the part that has a "snapped part" ?

i think if you could send us a pic ...that would cut down on the confusion here and get ya back on the road quicker :)

this is the hole that is used to take off the tension like devilboy said....a rachet or breaker bar will fit into that square hole to move it counter clockwise.

Either way, whatever pulley you're describing needs to be replaced...you can't drive on it.

Damn...how much will it cost me? i can go to the ford dealership at the end of the week if its not to expencive its the idler pully i was talking about btw...the berrings look snapped...so i think i just will replace it...while i am in the motor is there anything else i should look at so i dont have problems down the road?

i think advance auto has them for around $20...i would NOT goto the dealership;)
useally the dealship will sell items about 2-3 times higher than a normal auto parts store will sell the same item for ...........just got done looking at the web site ( advance auto ) they range from $ 16-25 dollars for a replacement idler pully .

if you want to you may want to replace the serpentine belt and also if your idler pully went out then you may also want to intertain the idea of buying a new "tensioner pully" (not the whole thing just the pully part ) because they pretty much see the same wear ...if one went out the other could be not far behind .

ok so how hard is it to change the pully on the tentioner and how much will that cost me.

same price if not cheaper on the tension pully ...to remove that assembly you need to see a bolt that hold the unit one the engine (just one bolt) take out that bolt and the unit should be able to come off the engine.if it's never been removed before then it may be a little hard to pull off ...keep trying should just fall right off .

the pully it's self is held by one bolt on that unit (you'll see it ) it's on the back side of the tensioner unit.spray some wd-40 on it and let it soak a minute or two then undo that bolt and remove the pully .

to put it all back together ...the tensioner unit fits into a slot on the engine ...only goes one way .just put it back on and twist the unit until you feel it go into a slot then put the bolt back in and secure it down .
