sorry i havn't posted...computer died... so can i get any idler pully or do i need a certain one? i know advanced auto parts dont carry 1994 X parts cause once i went looking for something a clutch bushing i think it was (it was AGES ago) and they didnt carry anything past 1996 and sent me to napa (which i didnt go to...i went to ford which was across the street :P) could i use any idler pully from like a 1996 4.0 or should i special order the part? where would i get the book also...my aunt gave me one...but it was for the 2002-2006 model...not 1991 to 1994 XD

umm..i bought my idler pully at advance auto for 25.98 (part # 89006 dayco brand ).as far as i know advance auto should carry every thing from the late 80's as parts go (if they told you different then somethings up) . i did some research and this pully is used on a variety of years and makes for ford (very, very, very common part).

the haynes book can be bought at any auto parts store another very common item.

goodluck . . .

ok the a/c thing looks like its not spining...is that normal?

please explain ? a/c compressor pully not spinning...this is normal ,the out side of the compressor has a clutch ,the belt runs freelly on the pully (spinning)..if the a/c is off the outside of the a/c compressor will look like it does not spin but it will
once the a/c is turned to the on postion from inside the truck ...the clutch on the a/c compressor catches then it starts to rotate the compressors internal pump. then you would see both the clutch and the belt spinning on the pully .

I turned on the AC in the car and it didnt spin...i may have been wrong since it is dark...ill check tomarrow and see. if it doesnt spin though...whats the problem

just to be clear ...you did have the engine running right? if it did not come on could be many things ... a/c relay,i belive if the system does not have any freon in it that to will not let the compressor to activate ......

ok yes the car was on...would the pully part move? i dont think it was...

yes the pully on the compressor always rotates,if you did not see the clutch on the compressor ( the big viewable disk that you see when you look at the a/c compressor) lock up and start to spin then your a/c compressor did not come on .when you see the clutch spin along with the belt that always spin then your a/c compressor is on and pumping freon.

ok what if the pully is not rotating?

 then you got a serious problem,if the pully (not clutch) is not turning on the compressor ...then you would be hearing the belt screeching and burning up in the engine compartment.

you do have the belt on the engine... right ?

yea everything looks right. I'm gonna have to make sure everything is spinning free. I smelt alittle bit (like LITTLE) of burning but that was after having the car sit for a month and then me driving it afround the block.

ive read from your past posts that you build computers right ? in the electrical world have you ever smelled burnt pc board or plastic insulation burning ? it's a smell that you can't forget kinda like burning rubber .
i would not think that after your explorer sat for a month you would be smelling the trucks exhaust thinking that it would be that .

bottom line is if the a/c compressor's pully does not spin freelly then ...

DO NOT DRIVE THE TRUCK ! till the a/c compressor has been replaced .

you are risking damageing your serpentine belt ( if not done so already) ,burning up the new ideler pully you installed and also putting wear and tear on all the rest of the pully system's on your truck.

edit::: not to mention if the belt tore in two then it could wrap around the radiator cooling fan and break the fins off then in turn slash into your radiator

Allright ill do a check tomarrow when its actuly light out so i can see and make sure everyhting is fine...if it isnt ill just get a belt that fits WITHOUT THE AC i dont need ac its just a nice add on. the ac hasnt worked for ever anywase...if the pully is fine i add freon. if it is broken ill get the shorter belt and install that...one other thing...how tight should the idler pully be?
and how loud would the belt squealing be? i dont hear any squealing

....from what you just typed do this :

1) buy some freon because you just NOW said the a/c has not worked
for a while (thats most likelly why your a/c compressor does not turn
on)

2) pick up a relay for the a/c could not hurt to have a new one.

3) dont buy a with-out a/c belt ,because if you are not hearing screeching
then your belt is fine.

the idler pully does not have a tightness ...that comes from your tensioner pully, it sets the load on the belt automaticlly (nothing to tighten or adjust )

so if i cant rotate it with my hand that is fine...i thought that was to tight so i loosened it some...tomarrow im gonna dive right back into the motor. also how loud would the squealing be?

very loud and the scent of burning rubber would be very noticeable

I didnt smell much burning...i think the only burning might have been alittle WD-40 or something like that...there was also no loud squealing at at...i didnt hear any :P also you never answered my other question...even though i could not turn the pully with my hand is it still ok?

you should not be able to turn the a/c pully freelly with the belt on ....i would think that if the belt was off then you could .tho i have not done this latelly my self to test that statement ,if i was to bet money on it ...it should if that belt is off .

I kinda ment the idler and with the belt off...i thought i tightened it to much so i loosened it...when i had it at the tightest...it was not turnable by hand...so i lossened it...im gonna have to check everything today to make sure :P but the idler...how tight should it be?
