The instructions that came with my new Moog inner tie rod end state specifically that the RACK must be held from rotating when loosing the tie rod end, to keep from damaging the internal steering rack gear.

First off, how is it even possible to hold the rack? There's no surface to grab onto.

Second, every write up i've found online ignores it completely. I did this job once before on another Explorer without holding the rack, and there wasn't any problems. But it still makes me nervous. I'm just using a huge crescent wrench to loosen the inner tie rod end.

It's a 96 XLT 5.0. Thanks all!

tip: don't turn the wheels by hand with the engine off or you'll get air in the system and it can be a pain to get it out again.

I used a pipe wrench on my '02 Mountaineer's inner tie rod end. I didn't worry about holding the rack either, but if you can, I'd recommend it just to be on the safe side...don't want to be replacing the rack too.
