I just recently did this on my '99. Open the console lid. Take out the coin changer. Remove the cup holder and tissue holder plastic pieces.
There is a cable at the bottom/front of the CD changer that needs to be disconnected. There are two screws under where the coin holder was and two more where the hinge to the lid is. Remove them.
Pull the CD changer out; seems to work best pulling up on the back first and sort of roating it out.
The CD changer is installed in the pocket that you just removed by a few more screwed.
As far as fit., anything other than something that matches factory size/mounting is going to require modifications. With the pocket out, however, there is a lot of room in the console.
