How to replace heating/air display light bulb in '98 explorer

i have a '98 explorer XLT and need to replace the light bulb that back lights the heating/ac control on the right below the radio. i can easily get the radio out, but have no idea how to get to the light bulb to replace it. i looked on this site, but couldn't find any how to's. any suggestions?

Welcome to this forum! Could you see anything behind these controls if you look behind them? There might be a socket holding the bulb in place inside of it if you don't see anything on its back.
there seem to be two sockets that plug into the back there. but i can't see how to undo them. i'm sure there is some sort of release, but it's impossible to see from the front...
 






Usually, those sockets rotate like 1/4 turn to lock or unlock them in the control panel and once you get the socket to release, pull the bulb straight out.
 






If you mean the wiring harnesses, those are clips. If you take out the 4 gold torx/nutscrews holding the HVAC control unit it in, you'll have more room to get teh harnesses off The bulbs just turn in 1/4 turn. If it won't budge counterclockwise, grab them lightly with a pair of pliers and turn them, sometimes they're stuck in good.
