Hello fellow Explorers,
I have not seen anything on this, but I apologize if this turns out to be a duplication of an earlier post.
With the temperature about -6 F my wife ran out of gas. She got confused while returning from shopping and turned away from civilization.
I have, unfortunately, had some experience with this problem.
The fastest and easiest way to get going again is to : 1. Add at least 2 gallons of gas to the tank. 2. cycle the fuel pump on and off, maybe 5 or 6 times (turn the key to position 2) then back to position 1. 3. turn the key to the start position as you normally would to start the car.
* When you turn the key to position 2, you should be able to hear the fuel pump turn on then off. If you don't. You have a fuel pump problem.
If all else is well. Your Explorer will fire up as if nothing had happened.
I learned this from experience. I ran out of gas before, as I mentioned. Once with AAA on hand it took over 45 minuets to get her to fire.
Hope this is useful for someone. Happy Holidays!

thanks for the tip!! i dont watch nascar watch but i like when they run out and it takes them forever to get it to fire back up in the pitts.. they gotta spray gas in the carb through the hood and stuff..

Sometimes if there is air in the fuel rails it helps to depress the small schraeder valve located just below the upper intake manifold as well.
