HOW TO: Tach doesnt work

The tach on my 93 X has never worked since I bought it. Im sure its a simple problem to fix (?) but I have no idea how.
Any info would be great.

My tach works fine when then engine is running, but when I shut it off, it only drops to 300-400 rpms. Any thoughts about what could be wrong?

the needle may be off what does it show teh engine idleing at

(edit)-- it will drop down to 0 rpm after a few hours.

can you help w/ this tach prob? for the last year it has been telling me it is idiling between 3200 and 4000, but of course its not, whats wrong and how do i fix it?
