My 2000 Explorer Sport with the 4.0 OHV makes a howl when it is in idle or when I put it into reverse or drive. The odd time it happenswhen in neutral. It also occurs when I am driving when the RPM's hit around 3000. The sound has been happening more frequently but is for the most part intermittant. Sometimes if I give it a quick rev it seems to stop, other times it continuies. It's really embarrassing :fire:

Try cleaning your IAC.. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84220 If that doesn't work, replace it.

sounds like maybe your power steering pump is going

i doubt its the power steering... ford has loud power steering pumps, but they are lousd all the time....

i am leaning more towards the iac, its a very common problem, but sounds more like a chirping other than a howl....

a howl can also be caused by otehr things, such as a modified intake or a vacuum leak....

I do have a swiss cheese airbox, would that be the culprit? I also have cat back exhaust. Is is bad to wait until spring to fix the problem? I would rather wait till it's not so cold out.

with modified intake and exhuast its highly possible nothing is wrong with your truck....

SO nothing will break if I don't fix it?

no but it may get hard to start and may not idle at a stop light.
Mine has been howling for 6 months right now. I plan on replacing it soon, cleaning helped but it didnt go away completely. they run about $80 in parts stores round here.

I also have a howling but only when the truck is cold or just been started after sitting over night. It sounds like a jet engine almost(not as loud of course) and it increases with acceleration then goes away(its a 94) It might be normal for my truck cause its done it for as long as I can remember so I never thought anything of it till I saw this thread. by the way what is the IAC?

This is a pic of a SOHC but it looks identical to an OHV. And Nevermind the arrow its the cylinder shaped thing on the right.

New IAC's are about 40 buck at Autozone if you don't feel like cleaning it.

Make sure the cooling fan turns free when the motor is off. The centrifugal clutch froze up in my '91 and it made a hell of a jet-engine sound.
