I've been using the 50 watt Halogen back up replacement lamps for about 3 years now. Not a drastic difference over the stock bulbs, but a noticeable one. I think I paid under $20 for mine, which I think is worth it. So if you can get them at a resonable price, I would recommend them.
Another possibility that I'm definitely planning on doing in the future is to wire some small foglights, like PIAA 1500's, into the backup light circuit and mount them on the rear bumper. Rick and Matt have already done this. Of course this would be much more expensive than the 50 watt replacement bulbs, but the light output and coverage area would be greatly increased.

I used them in my explorer for a while, but both of them burned out. I don't know if they were just bad bulbs, or the wattage was too high. I ordered them from the Performance Products Catalogue. They really weren't noticibly briter anyway. I don't think they were worth the money, especially since they burnt out too soon.

I bought two pair of the 50watt bulbs from Performance Products about a year ago and put them in my 98 Sport and My dad's 00 Sport. I didn't notice a big diference, but I live in the subs and it never gets dark dark here. My dad lives in the country and he said they made a big diference. When my wife got her 99 XLT I took the passenger side 50wat out of mine and put it on the drivers side of hers and she noticed the difference right away( I hadn't told her that I had swapped them, she came in one night and said her passengerside backup light was going out HA HA). I can also tell the difference on mine. Bottom line is it worth the $9 or what ever it is... yes in my opinion.

I thought about replacing my factory backup bulbs with higher wattage ones, but heard that some people actually melted or otherwise damaged their lenses or lighting system. The higher heat of the new bulbs can cause problems if you're not careful.
I'm really happy with my Pilots. They're really bright at night. The garage for my apartment complex can be pretty dark at night, and these lights light up the whole aisle!

Get additional lights
I suggest that istead of replacing your bulbs in the factory housing you should just add a set of cheap driving lights. You can get a set at AutoZone (metioned above) or like myself you can get a good set of Blazer (brand name not a ch*vy) driving lights at Wal-Mart. They use an H3 bulb, as does my 1,500,000 candle watt spot light. So while I was at Wal-Mart I got a couple of replacement bulbs for the spot light. They are 12v and 130 watt and <!>DAMN BRIGHT<!> Whole package was 19.95 for lights and 4.95 for each bulb.
