I've got a 00 XLS factory head unit has the cd/tape but I dont think it has an amp or sub, I have an pioneer unit from my old car and was wanting to put it in there, for now using the stock door speakers and hooking up an amp and some 12"s i have. My question is I was in Walmart and I saw an adapter that allows you to use the factory wiring, but there were two different models. Does anyone know which adapter to get? Also will it have remote turn on wire?.

I take it to get the factory HU out I have to remove those two screws holding the AC vents and either get ther radio removal tool or make a U out of a clothes hanger.

Eventually I want to replace the door speakers but funds are low so I'll have to deal with stk being powered of the pioneer hu...

Any advice would be welcomed
Thanks
Dwyane

I think the '00 is the same as my '99, wherein you only need the radio removal tools. As for the amp, my '99 Premium sound had no external amp, but i'm not sure about your XLS. You could pull the radio out and look at the plugs in the factory deck. My radio had a big square multi pin (like 20 wires) and then the changer plug. The other option is 2 radio plugs, they are flat and have about 5-8 wires each. If you have an amp in the back, you will need to buy the amp by pass kit which includes the amp by pass plug and the wires that must be run from the amp in the back up to the radio. Hope this helps.

Thanks..So I shouldn't have to remove the faceplate that holds the A/C vents? When you say amp in the back are you saying behind the radio or the back of the X?Where would the amp be located and where do you get the amp by pass kit,how much$$?

You should not need an amp bypass kit for an '00 as the amp is built into the factory HU, just like aftermarket ones.

Thanks Alec,

I'll get a removal tool and see what type of adapter I need to get at walmart. The adapter will prevent me from having to run wire to the fuse box, correct?

Does anyone know the color code scheme for pioneer hu's speakers? My little stickers aren't on the wires anymore telling which speaker wire is which.

He has premium sound which uses an amp mounted behind the trim, in the rear of the truck. If you don't have the premium sound package, then you don't have an amplifier.

Ok.. lets see how my memory works...

red = switched
yellow = constant (12V)
black = ground

Speakers... (black trace = ground)

White = left front
Gray = right front
Green = left rear
Purple = right rear

And yes, using the adapter will allow you to use the factory powers, ground, and antenna lead.

Chances are you'll need the plug that is square and has like 15-20 wires in it.

Thanks HokieBart,

I'm going to give it a shot installing this weekend. if it isnt too cold or raining...Will the antenna fit into back of my pionner HU or do i need some type of adapter? seems like i read someplace some cars need adapters for their ants.

Guess after I get this installed,I'll spring for some door speaker replacements

Nope... no antenna connector needed... Ford doesn't do whack things like Nissan and have a funk A$$ antenna plug.

Yeah, definately go with new door speakers. You're Pioneer will have more power and any aftermarket speaker is superior to stock. I recommend the Infinity Reference speakers for people who are ballin' on a budget. Just get speaker adapters (or buy from Crutchfield and get em free :-p)

Good luck

good deal,
and im def on a budget :- )

Woody,
I thought all the 98+ HUs were internally amped and you only had an external amp if you have the sub. I know mine still had an external amp in 96, but I'm talking 98+.
