When installing an aftermarket HU with a wiring harness adaptor kit ( from Crutchfield for example ), Does this bypass the factory amp and provide hook up for all the speakers and power? In other words does this device make the install plug n play?

Thanks.

no it will still utilize the factory amp. The output of even an aftermarket head unit is typically not enough so it can be used as its own amp. Bypassing the stock amp is tougher then that (trust me I found out when installing my 400 watt amp for my four speakers in the explorer)

How, then do you bypass the factory amp when using a wiring harness and aftermarket HU?

Thanks....

it involves basically rewiring it so it no longer looks to the old amplifier, so that it just looks to the new amplifier (I wouldn't recommend running a stock OR aftermarket head unit with no amplifier, even if it is Fords stupid little 20 watt per channel deal.

You don't have to use an amp with an aftermarket headunit. I have not used one ever on the 4 seperate systems I have.

I would recomend using an aftermarket amp though if you want better sound. :D

I got the kit from Car Toys and un-pluged the amp from both sides and pluged this "kit" between the two plugs and wala! Or you could just run new speaker wire to each speaker. Thats all the factory amp does, is run wires from it to the speakers and to the headunit. At least this is true on my 92, I would assume that the newer ones have this same kit availble for them.

If your looking for a cheap place to get one this is cheaper then car toys was.

Looks like they carry the bypass conection you would need for a good price.

I just found my replacement wiring for one of my headunits!!! Woohoo!! For cheaper then $50 too!! ya!

I appear to be as dumb as dirt on this but...... does the adaptor bypass the factory amp but still allow power from the new HU to go to the speakers without rewiring them?

Thanks....

Correct... your new HU has the amp built in. Its still better then the stock one though. Its basically a plug through deal where your factory amp has two plugs on both sides. One side is coming from the stock HU and the other goes to the speakers. When you get an Aftermarket HU you CAN'T use the stock amp. Its to underpowered and will basically not let you hear anything. :D
