getting a horrible grinding noise the last couple of days from the drivers side, got it jacked up and the wheel off. if I take hold of the brake disk I can wobble it in all directions, appears to be play in the hub, is this normal or does it sound like I need to replace????

Graham.

hi the disc is only held on by the wheel or it may have a clip on the studs .i would put the wheel on to check for play in the bearing. cheers chris

I had the same with my Volvo S40 (do I get kicked off the forum for this?). It was a seriously loud grinding noise. On investigation, it turned out to be a largish piece of grit between one of the pads and the disc. It cut a groove in the side of the disc. It may be worth taking the caliper off and checking since you've already remaove the wheel. Now back to Explorers.... I agree with Chris that you need the wheel on to check the bearings. The disc is loose on the studs otherwise and is only held on loosely by the caliper. GRoB

ok, removed pads and checked for any debris etc but all looks fine, stuck the wheel back on and it rocks a good 1/4 inch in all directions

ok it looks like your wheel bearings are gone .means you need new hub . cheers chris

cheers Chris, think I'd better check the other side just in case :)

Graham, what was the outcome of this, cause I ain't seen the Explorer out cruising for a while.

Parts were lost by the courier, they arrived a couple of days ago so hope to get it sorted over the weekend depending on the weather :)
