I have a 95 Explorer Sport with Control Trac 4wd. I have been getting some noises when 4wd is engaged. I narrowed it down to a popping noise whenever there is load on the 4wd. I was looking through the ford service and it described this noise as being a problem with the hubs. I could not find any information on how to fix it. Any ideas of what to do?

Thanks

Does it happen when you are turning? What kind of road/conditions are you driving in when it happens? The hubs in the '95+ are sealed units, and are very durable. I doubt it is an issue with the hubs.

It happens when I am going straight as well as turning. It has been on snowy roads. Whenever it loses some traction and kicks in the front is when it starts popping. The weird thing about it, is everything seems to be functioning normally with the exception of the noise. It shifts in and out of 4Low just like it should with very little noise (soft clunk). It goes into 4wd when it starts losing traction and it kicks right back out when traction is regained.

It could be the t/fcase clutch slipping. Check the fluid level in the transfer case. The early control-trac Explorers were know for some harsh engagement of the auto 4x4, so it may be normal as well.
